I am planning to hunt plains game this July/August. First time to Africa and will be hunting in Namibia.

I have a Browning A bolt stainless stalker in 300 Win Mag that I plan to take.

Of course the delima is what bullet? I am considering 180/200 gn Barnes TSX or Possibly a Nolser Partition in 180/200/220.

I have a good background in using 130/150 partitions in 270 Win. No game shot with Barnes TSX to date.

Any experience in this area would be much appreciated.

In my .300 Win, the .200 grain Partition over H1000 gives me the best combination of accuracy and power (2950 fps) in my rifle. I have hunted only in Canada, and moose is the biggest animal on which it was used, but I feel very confident with that load.

Namibia

I just got back from Hunting 12 animals in Namibia this past September. 2 kudu,eland, blue wilderbeest, red hartbeest, blesbok, duiker, warthog, steinbok,orix,springbok, zebra. I had my .308 and my .338 Ultra Mag. I shot everything with my .338 UM. 250g Noseler Accubond, Fed 215 primer, Reloader 22. I dropped the Wilderbeest at 278 yards. Shot the orix at 422 yards (dropped). What I can tell you is shot placement, shot placement, shot placement. Right on the shoulder or the neck. Study up on your anatomy. Accubond are your best bet, as they are the most accurate and penetrate well. I was never able to get any accuracy with the barnes. Good luck.

No experience with the Barnes, but both of my .300 Win Mags love Nosler Partitions.

I have hunted plains game in South Africa with my .300 Wby. Mag. I used Nosler 180 grain ballistic tips and had no complaints. I took my greater kudu at 450 yards with one shot, my gemsbok at about 250 yards, numerous blesbok and springbok at various ranges. I have also killed elk, mule deer, pronghorn and white tails with the same bullet and have never had any problems. When I go back, I will be using the .300 and Nosler ballistic tips again. I may consider an Accubond for eland.

I have used both the .300 Win mag (200grn) and the .338 Win mag (.225grn) on the dark continent. Most shots up North were under 150 yards in the Bushveld country, several were under 50 yards.

You just remember that if your hunting Eland, stay off that massive shoulder unless you have a .375H&H and a 300 grain bullet. My 225 grn premium TBBC bullet never penetrated that bone at 100 yards.

I have been on two plains game safaris and taken 10 specices up to 1800 pound elan with a 30-06 and 180 gr. Partitions. Flawless performance. My second choice would be Swift A-Frames. Keep the copper bullets.

I myself would use those 200 grn bullets with the .300 Win mag and not look back. You will still have quick velocity and good penetration. If you plan on shooting a Kudu and especially the Eland, remember to shoot "behind" that massive shoulder OK.

Probably more 300 magnum caliber rifles of one sort or another show up in our camps in Namibia, RSA, Tanzania, Zimbabwe or wherever, and they are certainly suitable of all plainsgame, Leopard and Lion.

I have seen the best results with 200 gr. Noslers, Woodleighs and North Forks in conventional premium bullets.

With monolithic bullets I like the GS Custo,ms 180 gr. HV the best, hands down..

Any of these bullets is more than suitable as is your chosen caliber..and based on these observations these are the bullet that I use. Shoot them at about 2900 to 3000 FPS depending on the caliber of your gun. They shoot flat and kill extremely well.
