Do to the recent shortage of handloading components, I was unable to purchace H110 powder for my upcoming 44 magnum loads. The only thing I could find was Alliant Powder's Power Pro 300-Mp. Its a magnum handgun spherical powder that the attendant said would work well for the 44 mag.

What do you all think?

The cool thing about 300MP is you don't need magnum primers..

Do magnum primers work better? From what I hear this stuff has quite the muzzle flash compared to h110, so I would have thought magnum primers would be required. Even more so considering the bottle says it is a specific magnum gun powder.

Nope.. I know it's counter intuitive, but this is some pretty amazing stuff.. Alliant tested and recommends standard primers.
Yes, it is flashy, in shorter barrels and has quite a bark to it, but it’s a high performance magnum handgun powder, so when hunting, the primary purpose I think, it doesn’t matter.

I did some work with .357 Mag also and found standard primers will work as advertised with 300-MP;

I use Alliant powder for nearly everything these days. My only 2 exceptions are TAC for 223 loads and Silhoutte for 38spl +P and 45acp +P loads, as that powder is low flash and nice for duplicating SD factory cartridges.

About a year ago Brian Pearce published some Power Pro-300MP Ruger Only .45 Colt loads in Handloader. They are suppose to run at the 32k level or a little lower.

Magnum primers

I don't believe Alliant recommends magnum primers for ANY of its pistol powders. At least they didn't used to. I had some really freaky things happen using 550 primers with Unique. Young and stupid.

Does anyone have any experience with 300-MP in 500 Linebaugh or similar cartridges?

I was able to find 1000 large handgun primers today for 39.99 will start loading soon.
