To the member previously posting a link on this topic - I went to delete the link in your post as you hadn't included a description of the link as we request so that others may decide if they care to click it on to read. In the process, I managed to delete your entire post.

Please repost if desired, but this time you need to include a short description of the link's content. Thank you.

Interesting link too very detail information that the average person wouldn't understand. Even with a college education I find the information overwhelming due too the fact its not in my arena of expertize i.e. engineering. Something like this study needs translation into language that the common individual without proper background can understand. As it stands it may or may not be true.

Ummm... drinking/eating from plastic containers also cause colon cancer as does preservatives in most prepackaged food products on the planet! Melting lead, casting bullets, and coating them with Alox is the least of my worries in this day and age.

Think ingesting the lead a person would put the Alox on would be more hazardous than the Alox! :p

I think it is a different chemical with the same name as "our" Alox.

The composition of Alox 350 is "confidential" and not listed on the MSDS, but the flash point is 82 C. Flash point of the ALOX in the article is 113 C. They have to be different compounds.

Study: "While we found no association between the Glu254Lys polymorphism and colon cancer risk, we have shown that G to A polymorphisms at −1752 and −1699 are in linkage disequilibrium and are significantly associated with a decreased risk of colon cancer ..."

Sounds more than a bit ambiguous so far as "causing colon cancer" to me.

Such studies are often perfomed in universities with grad students pursuing a novel "new" topic for its own sake. The results are often unclear and result in the "need" for funding to allow further study, meaning they seek other people's money so they can continue to play games in labs without having to actually work for a living.

Given the weak concentration of Alox in bullet lubes and the way we use it, I have no fear of the "sky is falling" in my loading room. But, to be safe, I will continue to avoid licking my fingers clean after handling lead bullets and their lubricants or after scratching my butt, etc., just to be really safe, you know what I mean?

Everything causes cancer, unless over consumption of said substance kills you more quickly by other means.

Fried foods, beer, toothpaste, used motor oil, blackened/grilled foods, a staggering host of prescription drugs, arsenic, chlorine, soy, etc., etc., etc..... the list is literally endless of things that you can over consume or use in an inappropriate manner and suffer ill effects from.

About the only thing I can think of that you can't over consume and die from is broccoli, although the attempt may make you wish you had

So, wash your hands, keep everything in moderation, and don't lick your fingers after sizing cast bullets. That should do it!

One might argue that hysteria over what causes cancer can cause cancer. Personally, I always theorized that stainless steel cages cause cancer in lab animals, which might skew the results of cancer studies, no?

Unless you dote on Alox and jelly sandwiches, you ought to be fine.

"The ALOX in the article has nothing to do with bullet lube Alox."

Probably true but the Chicken Littles of the world aren't likely to bother with the details; "Can't be too careful, you know?" Gag.

Gentlemen,

unless things have changed, we are all going to die. Of that, I am certain. More likely to be killed by some moron driving like they have craniorectal intrusion than anything else the way they have been driving here the alst two days...

The English language employs only 26 letters. Eventually we ran out of abbreviations and initials and started recycling them. They are repeated in reference to multiple things in multiple contexts. Is the NRA the National Rifle Association or the National Reclamation Act? Well, it's both. Lots of stuff built on reclaimed land at taxpayer's expense in the first half of the last century has "NRA" proudly displayed on a plaque or molded into the concrete, but that doesn't mean shooters, in particular, had anything to do with it beyond paying taxes.

If you read through the article, you quickly discover its "ALOX", in the context of the article, is an enzyme that acts in the colon to break down arachidonic acid, which is a polyunsaturated omega 6 essential fatty acid found in muscle cells. Your body makes this enzyme for itself, so you can't prevent exposure to it. If you don't want to be exposed to the carcinogens that result from its action on arachidonic acid in the digestive process, you have to stop eating meat. Not a likely thing for most members of this board.

But Nick, what will keep the potatos from taking up room on my plate if there's no meat?!?!?!
And No, veggies can't carry the meal.

Don't eat potatos or anything else that grows in the soil!... they cause cancer! Even organic stuff cause as we all know automobiles, air crafts, small engines, and probably alien crafts have polluted the entire surface of the planet (oceans included) through the burning of fossil fuels. Well, i guess we may as well just eat alox since meat and veggies are out.

ALOX is the trade name of a specialty lubricant from the Lubrizol Corporation. I have requested a Material Safety Data Sheet from them. The arachidonate lipoxygenase (CAS 82391-43-3) referred to in the link as "ALOX" is an enzyme that catalyzes a particular oxidation reaction in biochemistry.

I fully expect Lubrizol's information will make it clear that there is no connection between their lubricant and the enzyme. Even so, I would remind everyone that good housekeeping and good hygiene should be observed any time ammunition or components are handled.

I will repost after I hear from Lubrizol.

Kinda reminds me of the story when I was shopping with my brother and s-i-l,,, She was looking at paint with some sort of non-skid for the dock.
Reading the hazzard statement,,, "contains silica, which in CA. studies has shown to be carcenogenic",,,She goes "but this cause's cancer in CA.",,,Bro said,,, we don't live in CA. where most everything causes cancer",,,LOL

If this is true,

Everything causes cancer ... beer ... blackened/grilled foods ... !
I should have been dead 50 years ago. Last I checked I still had a pulse and am still sucking in air. Oh yeah ... still drinking beer and eating grilled foods. Sometimes I wonder if I consume more beer than air. :)
