Ok, any of you AR shooters neck size your ammo? or do you resize the whole case? I just picked up an AR (Bushmaster). I've been reloading for a bolt gun and always neck sized fire formed cases with great success in accuracy and function. Just thought I'd check first before I waste my time and material. Thanks.

Conventional logic says to FL size for semi-auto, lever and pump-action rifles. IME, your gun will jam less frequently when doing so, because the cases go into the chamber reliably. Bolt-actions are more deliberate and strong enough to close on a case that is a slight "crush fit". This helps with accuracy but can be a liability, especially in an automatic.

With bolt guns, you can supply that little extra ump to close the bolt with a tight shell, that's not the case with a semi. Neck size bolts guns until they get hard to close, only then do I full length size those. With Semi's, full lenght size every time, unless you don't mind wrestling with a tight round in the chamber from time to time. If you already have a full length die for your bolt gun, use it and make sure you are getting 100% full length resize, using the shell hold of the same make as the dies. If you have chambering problems, then go to the small base die. The more you resize, the short the brass life

I full length resize with an added twist. Using Reddings benchrest shell holders I only bump the shoulder back just a couple thousandths, instead of the full .006" my FL dies shove it back. No FTF and the brass lasts longer ....when i can find it! :D

Right. All you would need to do, ordinarily, is just make sure the shoulder is bumped back a bit. More than that works the brass (although gives some leeway for crud in the chamber).

I neck size for my .35 Rem with no problems, but that's probably uncommon. Then again I keep the chambers clean and that brass is only fired in my Marlin.....
