My son used my Gunbroker account and bid on a 257 weatherby but he bid on the wrong one. Looks like I will be stuck with it because the seller will not cancel the bid. So now I am looking to see if there are any options for me to use the rifle. I am looking to just have the barrel and chamber redone still using the 257 case. Any and all ideas are welcome. Thank you.

As funny as this sounds the problem I have is that I agree with you. I already have one, and its sub-MOA at 1000 meters. I love the cartridge, but I do not need two of them. The only thing I though to do with the rifle was to run super-hot loads through it and play around with different powders and charges. Use/misuse the gun so that I do not wear out or weaken the gun that I like.

Well, there's very little that hasn't already been done, so unless you just want to throw more money at the "problem", I would suggest selling it or using it, as is. Nothing wrong with having two guns of the same caliber. If your son bid on it, was the idea for the two of you to have matching guns? My dad and I have, on two occasions, gone out and bought the same gun/cartridge, intentionally. (He calls me his "armorer", as I do all of the reloading...)

My dad owns a .257 Weatherby Accumark (115 grain ballistic tips)
I own a .257 Weatherby Mark 5 Deluxe (120 grain Sierra HP)

He just bought a Remingtion LDS ( I believe thats right) chambered in a 257 Weatherby with a 24 inch barrel. (100 grain Ballistic tips)

Side story. Apparently Reliant changed the burn characteristics of RL-22. When he was loading for his new 257 he was using powder from a canister he bought several years and and using data from around 10 years ago. First time he shot it, it locked the bolt up. He took it out to a friend of his who happens to be the gunsmith. After they got the bolt open they shot it one more time through a chronograph to see what it was measuring. 4050 fps with a 100 grain bullet. He immediately went and bought a new reloading manual. If you compare the load data from the same manual just different editions the difference in the RL-22 load was 10 grains different but the velocity is showing about the same. Reliant wouldn't admit this when we called them but Its pretty amazing that that cartridge could shoot that size bullet that fast ( however not practical or safe at all).

Well I picked up the gun and scoped it and shot it. The sad part is it is shooting better groups with factory Weatherby ammunition than my backcountry edition with a Leupold scope and handloads. Spent about $2500 for one and just over a grand for the other. Funny how that stuff happens.

257 WBY is a screamer, and so in the 270 WBY.

I guess it would all depend on what you want to do with it.
Yea, all these and the 7mm are the same short magnum WBY case. I like the 270 the best.

I cannot see what one could wildcat it too that is not commercially available? Unless one wants the WBY shoulder one a ;larger caliber, sort of a short magnum .338, rather than a 340 WBY? Perhaps a 9.3mm?
