I have an old Remington 81 in good shape but someone has refinished the stock with varnish or something similar. What would be the best way to strip it and refinish to an authentic look. I hate the shiny, modern look on this old gun. I would like some kind of oil finish. Should I sand or use a stripper or both? Can anyone recommend a good finish? I am a fairly competent woodworker.

I too have a great old Remington Mod 81A in .300 Savage. My gunhas abiut 90% original finish. The old Remington finish had a little French Red in it. Don't sand, strip, or scrap! Buy some Fornby(sp) furniture finish. Get the one that removes the dead surface varnish and then applies the tung oil base. This method will not take out the old deep varnish that seals the grain and gives the old color.
Best Regards, James
