The bolt face of a Sako L461 will not accept the 308 case. The rifle was a .222.

Yes the boltface would have to be opened for 308 and the extractor changed. For that matter I know a man who opened one up to magnum and used .458 Win Mag. on an L461. Not very practical but it can be done.
