Bill,
as the advanced load developer, is it concievable to make a load in the 444 marlin that would achieve near-.416 performance?  I know that the 444 will perform out to 200 yards, no problem with Marshall's 280-330 grain bullets, but is there more that can be done?<!--emo&???--><img src="http://beartoothbullets.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->?

.444Shooter,

Check out our Field Performance section and the Water Buffalo account posted there:   The shooter used .432"-355g WLNGC bullets to take a nice Water Buffalo... I sure doubt that he'd have been much more deceased with a .416 of any configuration!

I don't know what more we can ask of the .444 when 280g pills are clocking 2500+ fps and 290's to 2400 fps.  That's an awefully large dose of knockdown for anything in North America to walk away from with reasonably placed shots!

Never mind me.... I'm just a triple-four junkie!

God bless,

Marshall

A quick check in "Cartridges of The World" will show you that Marshall and Co. .444 Marlin loads fall right in with what cartridges that most of the African game was killed stone dead years ago! I'd love to have a double rifle in .444 Marlin!
Best Regards, James

444shooter,

As both Marshall and James pointed out, the 444 Marlin loaded with the right bullet can cleanly take any animal that walks God's green Earth. If you pick up a copy of John Taylor's African Rifles and Cartridges you will find that many of Pondoro's suggestions for lion, buffalo, and such are largely ballistic twins of a properly-loaded Triple Four.

It and its grandad the .45-70 can thump 'em hard with the best of 'em.

And James, you'll have to wait in line for that 444 double. I'll be first in line for sure!
