Gentlemen, I just bought a new Blackhawk SS 45LC with 51/2 barrel. Cyl. throats are about .4508  bore dia. is.4513. Used egg sinkers (the hard kind) to slug.Should I ream the cyl. throats to the STD .4525 and use .452 bullets or would I get a better seal with the bore if I go to .453 throats and use .453 bullets. I will lap the barrel. Also I am thinking about buying a throat reamer from Brownells. Can anyone tell me if this is a dry reamer or should I use some type of cutting oil.         Thanks for any help                                                                                                                ED P

ED,

Congratulations on your new pistol! First I would slug the bore and throats again with the softer sinkers or the dead soft muzzle loading balls to be certain of your measurements. Throat dimesions of .453 seem to be the normal recommendation and a .452 bullet will fit your gun nicely after the throats are opened up. The .453 sized throats will allow the use of the WFN bullets with no problems. Tighter throats can make chambering those big boys difficult.

I'm not familiar with the Brownell's reamer so I can't answer that part. Perhaps some of the other forum members can speak from experience.

I concurr with MT that you will most likely be more happy with the .453" throats, and after fire-lapping you'll have a real winner!   5.5"SS Blackhawk .45LC.... nice!

God bless

Marshall

PS I moved this from Gen. Disc. to Handguns while I was at it!
