I'm interested in loading some 12ga. shotshells with Pyrodex RS, using published data. Can these be fired from a modern pump shotgun or should I stick with a single shot? If a pump can be used, are any precautions or extra cleaning procedures necessary? Thanks for any advice.

Certainly they can be fired in a pump gun of any vintage and will work fine. I've always shyed away from using black in anything other than single shots or double barrels for the very reason you allude to, the extra clenaing I believe should be performed. I don't mind disassembling actions but it isn't on my list of favorite things to do.

Perhaps in a bottom eject such as the Ithaca 37 it wouldn't be as much of a concern for me. And maybe I'm being too cautious or lazy and there aren't any problems associated with doing so.

Not a good idea! i have done it before, but you have to completely break the gun down and scrub the parts. Even upon ejection of the hulls residue is deposited in the workings of your gun. Some of the best patterns you can get from a shotshell are realized when using blackpowder through a modern choked gun though.

I thought that might be the case, so it will be a single shot. Very encouraging such good patterns are possible. One other question, does anyone have Pyrodex load data for the 3.5 inch 12ga? I have access to a supply of once fired Federal hulls.

Data, no. Plan, yes. Experiment to bring your powder charge up high enough so that when you compress the wad and dump the shot the powder/wad column is at the correct height for crimping. That's your load.
