Hey All,

Im going to build my own AR-15 from scratch. The reason I am doing this is for the satisfaction of building it on my own and it will be cheaper to buy parts over time then to buy a whole gun at once or the full upper and lower recievers and just put them togeather. I will post updates on my project. Would appreciate any imput you guys may have also great places to buy some of the parts I need. The gun will be used mainly for target shooting and Predator hunting.

You may be able to buy the various parts cheaper but by the time Shipping & Handling is added to each item you'll be way over price of a complete rifle. I've been there and done what your proposing. Lower and upper receivers will cost about $80 each but the parts kits for the lower will run about $50 plus. Add $50 plus for either rigid stock or more for the adjustable ones. Barrels can be had for $150 but then add the flash hider, handguards and front sight assembly for another $60 plus. Add the special tools if you don't have access to them and your time. If you shop around new ones can be found here in the Dakota's for $600-650. Free float handguards and other accessories just drive the price up. Most of my builds run $700-$800 with quality barrel, target/match trigger, free float handguard and other parts. That's even with my discounts from suppliers.

Hailstone, is the stock 1-7 H-Bar barrel by nature accurate? This particular rifle I'm wanting to rework has shot just under 1"- 5 shot groups @ 100 with it's preferred handloads. Wanted to go with a flat-top upper using the original barrel and a floating handguard. Will go with either the rail gas block or a plain one if going that route.
Wanting to use it for a prediator and spare prairie dog rifle.

Go over to AR15.com. Tons and tons of information as well as guides on how to build your AR. I have done two dozen now and cannot stop. BRD is very debilitation.
I buy almost all my parts from Brownells, Midway, YHM, and DD. This board is a great place but if you want AR information get your kiester over to AR15.com. See you there.

And get your C&R FFL. $35 for three years and all those people I mentioned give dealer discounting to C&R holders even though you are not a dealer. I save enough every week to pay for my C&R license.

Start off with a nice forged lower reciever, mines a rock river. When you get ready for your upper just buy it complete so you won't have to buy a barrel wrench and head-spacing gauges. Like BB said go over to ar-15.com, lots of good info. Dave

If costs are a concern, Bravo Company has forged M4 milspec demo blemished uppers for $70 with EPC and FA. AIM Surplus has Surplus Arms and Ammo stripped lowers for $60, also forged and milspec.
LPKs can be had for $40-$50 from many ARFCOM industry partners.
Great barrels can be had relatively cheaply from AR Performance, and Bravo Company as well as Daniel Defense and YHM.
Bolts and Carriers from Bravo Company and Spikes Tactical (who also sells a very nice stripped lower of which I have many) as well as buffers and gas blocks and tubes can be had at very decent prices.
Stocks from Mag-Pul and VLTOR as well as standard A2 are available from Midway or vendors on ARFCOM.
Forend, again Midway, Brownells, BCM... many ARFCOM vendors.
Charging handles are from $20 to $90. BCM (Bravo Company) has a nice Gunfighter model which is getting rave reviews, but I swear by the PRI Gasbuster, but they are darned expensive at $82 dealer.

Seriously, go over to ARFCOM (ar15.com) and look around. Also check out their Equipment Exchange. You can get many used items and save a ton as well as see what many of the industry partners have for sale on the boards.
In short, if you cannot get it through the sellers on ARFCOM, you don't need it.

And you won't need headspace gauges. These are not bolt actions. The headspace is set on the barrel when the barrel extension is put on. Like I have said earlier, I have build two dozen ARs and LRs and I have bought all the gauges. I have yet to find any that had excessive headspace and only one that would not close on the GO gauge. And while theoretically I might someday find ammo on the large side of SAMMI (or NATO) spec and it may not chamber, that day has not come. It is a rare bird that will not headspace correctly, especially in 5.56.
And don't be in a rush to buy a barrel nut wrench. Many forend makers have proprietary barrel nuts and you will need their wrench to put them on, so hold off until you know what you need.
You will need an upper receiver block. I like the two-pin type by DPMS or Frankfort Arsenal (Midway sells both) and they will hold ANY upper. The clamshell type will not hold many uppers such as the VLTOR or DPMS LO-Pro or other odd shaped uppers. The two-pin will hold them all. Roll pin holders and punches are a great help, also available from Midway and Brownells. You really do not need a lower receiver block. I bought a Flipper block when I first started and have yet to use it.
