Hi Guys, Looking for some cast bullets with g.c.'s to feed my .405 95 Win.. Would it be possable to get 2000-2200 fps with this cartridge and cast G.S. bullets say 300-350 gr's.? I normally use RL-7 in my .405 it seems to be very accurate in rifle. Does anyone know of a LBT mold for this cal.? I know this is not a very popular round. Hope someone can help. Jack K.

Jack, you need a copy of Ken Water's Pet Loads, or a Rifle/Handloader from March 1982.  He's got quite a write up on the .405.

A factory Winchester 300 grain load was reported to achieve 2300 fps.  So you should be able to get this easily with a good quality cast bullet.

Ken sure likes RL-7 in this cartridge.  He also reports that .41 Mag bullets give good results.  So... if I were you I'd start with the heaviest weight .41 Mag bullet you can find, 250 grains? 265 grains?  and go from there.

Best of luck.  There have been some other recent articles on the .405 but I can't remember off the top of my head where they are.

Hi, Jack:
Lyman had a 288 grain round nose, mould #412263 listed in 1968 (Handbooks 22-45, so a long time). You might get lucky and find one. Check out NEI too.

Thanks Jack,
I checked out the NEI mold site and think the .411-350- GC  may be the way to go. I hope that I can get 2000 fps. + with this bullet. This bullet should work nicely in the .40-.348 A.I. that I want to build also. I think I will be ordering a four cavity mold of this type. I also will be trying some .41 caliber bullets in 265 and 280 grs. I hope the 280 gr. bullet doesn't have to long of a nose for the over all cartridge lenght. Well THANKS AGAIN for the info. Hope you have a Safe and Happy Christmas and Great New Year!

God Bless,
Jack

Hey Jack, good luck and if the bullet doens't quite work out for OAL, use the Lee factory crimp die and crimp where you want.  Good tip from Marshall's .444 articles.
