I'm considering a 6x18 Cabelas Tactical for an AR-15 as a spare prairie dog rifle. At $179 it seems like a good deal. Had really good experiences with their Pine Ridge scopes. Does anyone have real world experience with these scopes?

I'll probably run over to Rapid City this weekend and take a look at 'em providing they are in stock. Since the kids gave me a gift certificate last Christmas, might spend it on that scope.

Definately let y'all know how it pans out.

Just got back from Cabelas and they didn't have the particular scope I was wanting to look at. Salesman said they sent them all back (usual proceedure) and they haven't returned yet.
Went over to the bargain cave and they had a Pine RIdge tactical but without the bullet drop turrents. Bought it for $85...6-18x44 with side parellelax. Gonna mount it on my Savage BVSS since the rifle is a solid performer. I want to give it a shakedown cruise before switching it to the AR.

I mounted the Pine Ridge tactical on my Savage and sighted it in. The adjustments were accurate and positive, sight in went without a hitch. First thing I noticed was I couldn't get the occular adjusted so the crosshairs weren't blurred. With most scopes with the parellax adjustment, the sight picture becomes sharper as you hit the correct range. This scope you could crank from stop to stop without any discernable difference in clarity.
The clencher for me was when prairie dog shooting today, I constantly struggled to keep a sight picture. The eye relief is short and very critical fore and aft and your head had to be positioned exactally top to bottom and side to side to get the beam of light thru it. Probably not huge issue if sandbagged and shooting off a stationary bench but what I want it for it's not going to work. Cabelas is getting it back tomorrow.

Thanks for the insight on the Pine Ridge scope, Monty. Guess the old addage still applies - you're gonna get what you pay for in optics.

Too bad you've had issues with the Pine Ridge. I personally own two of them, rimfire scopes, mounted on bolt action 22's. I got them in the Bargain cave in Hamburg, pa. While they are no Leupold, they fit the bill for a .22 scope. Both are 4x by 32mm, with fine + hairs. They work well on targets, as well as bunnies and squirrels.

Take it back to them. even tho it came out of the Bargain cave, chances are they will honor the return. Cabelas is good that way.

You are correct Chris. I had such good experiences with the Pine Ridge 2x7's and 3x9, I decided to take a chance on the tactical.

Monty;

try this;
set a target out @ a known distance, say 100 yards. Set the parallax @ 100
using the bell closest to your eye, turn the bell until the view is clear....Not talking about the zoom ring, but the bell itself...if it turns, and is not fixed. do this at at least 9 power. With any luck, you might be able to focus the view sharper than just using the parallax

your results on the pine ridge scope mirors mine. they work well enough for the lower power scopes but get to the higher magnification (4-16 or 6-24) and at the higher end of the magnification the eye releif got so critical i couldn't keep my head steady enough without the image winking at me. and if you can't adjust the occular to clear up the cross hair it just aint gonna work for anyone. but i had the exact same resuts a couple years ago and have not tried them since. not bad mouthing them, just confirming my personal experiances as well.

Like Chris said, Cabelas took the scope back without a problem. Kudos to them for great customer service.

Still on a search for a replacement for the Nikon 4.5-14x which is going on the AR.

Just to update this thread I found another scope to try. Last weekend there was a gun show in Rapid City and came across a new in the box Leupold Vari-XII 6-18x with target crosshairs. The price was very right and it's mounted on the Savage now waiting for a day without wind or rain so I can sight it in.
