I was given a mauser rifle by my grandfather several years ago and am trying to figure out exactly what I have here. I believe it is a 7mm, but there are just so many models out there. There is very little in the way of identifying marks. X3715 is stamped on the bolt, receiver and barrel (serial # maybe?).

The only other makr is either a misstamped 5 or something that looks roughly like the pi sign from math. I have a couple of pics but don't see a way to attach them. Any ideas on how to trace this thing and figure out a value would be greatly appreciated!

That's just not enough description to even guess what it might be.

You can slug the bore with a soft lead slug and mike it for size to determine the bore diameter. That won't tell you the chambering, but it left untouched and original barrel, it will likely one of the old military cartridges.

The top of the receiver should have some sort of crest and a date, plus the left side of the receiver should have a manufacturer's name.

Bassman,

Can you post a pic? Is it an orginal military verison, commerical or sportized? We need a bit more detail. You can get a free photo hosting at www.hunt101.com that's what I use.

Crest on the receiver ring (if any) would be a big help. Assume that's gone? Also, any writing on the left side of the receiver..... if it still exists.

Gas port on the left side of the receiver about where the back end of the chamber is? Can you tell if it's a 93/95 mauser, or a later 98 pattern?

Diffenitly a 93 or 95 but can not say which for sure. A better picture of the action would help. I used to have one just like that in 6.5x55 Carbine made in 1894. I can't answer many more as I do not have my reference books with me.

Both the 93/95's cock on closing the bolt. The 93' will have a flat bottom bolt and the 95 a round bottom bolt. You also have what is known as small ring Mauser (reciever in size in front of bolt) Differences are: A safety feature offered by the Model 1895 was a low shoulder at the rear of the receiver, just behind the base of the bolt handle, which would contain the bolt in the unlikely event that the front locking lugs sheared off due to excessive pressure. So it looks like you have a 93'. Serial numbers were stamped where you see them. Check under the barrel under the stock for additional markings and if any importers marks are there. I would also get the chamber cast for the correct cartridge. Another very successful and widely used Mauser cartridge was the 7.65x53.

As for the lack of other markings, this is a good read if it is a Spainish carbine.

It may be a slightly sportized 1916 Spanish carbine where the front forearm was cut back and wings removed from the barrel. Is there a gas hole on the left side of the reciever by the serial number? The Spanish used a "X" prefix in 1931 dated guns. Does your rear sightit have the numbers on top and on the side of the sight? This is a 1916 rear sight.

Do wish that I had my Mauser collectors book with me. I have seen that stock before but can't remember the nomenclature. As mentionned earlier had a very similiar stocked Swedish 1894 in 6.5x55 but that got stolen from me.
