aj, the front sight is easy enough to remove with the correct punch. as you can see it is very small. it does not need to be put in a vise, and a very light few taps will remove it.
i think any body who could remove the sight could easily grind the front of the sight down to a 30-45 %slant then lightly file down the burr.
i bought my 629 new in this shop, about a month before. so i stupidly figured this smith would not charge me for re-placing the sight. WWWRONG.
if you were careful, you would not even have to take the sight out of the barrel, just wrap several layers of good duck tape around the barrel, and grind it slowly. i would have done this myself if i had known this bum was going to charge me like he did. and he supposedly had a good name in the local trade.
