Went to the range today to try out my new Buffalobore 335 gr. for my 444.  Still waiting for BTB order.  Took three shots and admired my one foot group!  Fired three more groups with them landing all over the target.  This is in a newly fire-lapped and polished gun.  I went immediately to my supplier , bought 50 300 gr. Hornady jacketed bullets, loaded them up and quickly shot a 2 inch group.  What gives?

It's likely that the Buffalo Bore bullets are undersized for your barrel. When sized properly (e.g., .432 rather than .430 or .429) quality hard cast bullets can easily equal or surpass any jacketed bullet in accuracy. There's a velocity bonus too given the lead bullet's increased lubricity and reduced bearing surface.

Srranger- I am firing a Marlin 444, the 335 Buffalobores are BTB bullets, which I assume are .432"  By the way Before firing these cartridges I also did a thorough copper cleaning of the bore as per Marshall's instructions. <!--emo&???--><img src="http://beartoothbullets.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->?<!--emo&???--><img src="http://beartoothbullets.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->?<!--emo&???--><img src="http://beartoothbullets.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->?<!--emo&???--><img src="http://beartoothbullets.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->?  Karl

Is your gun ported, and if so, are the cast bullets plain base or gas check?

MikeG-My rifle is not ported, and the bullets are not gas checked.  They came as a cartridge, I have ordered bullets from BTB 330 gas checked.  By the way just returned again from the range, the Hornady bullets shot about 1.5".  Karl

Karl,

Just for the record, the bullets in your Buffalo Bore ammo are NOT from Beartooth Bullets.  I'm not certain who is making the .44-330g for Tim Sundles, but many of the bullets in his line-up come from Cast Performance bullet company.

We here at Beartooth can't keep up with our retail customer's needs, much less a large consumer such as Buffalo Bore.  Tim called me about a year and a half ago for our .460"-405g LFNGC bullet for his factory ammo, and I had to tell him the same thing I just posted here.  I was flattered, but unable to make the kind of committment necessary to fulfill his needs on an ongoing basis, with the hand-type production we employ.

I do suspect that the problems are two-fold in your gun.  Number one, the plain base bullets at the velocities you're describing ( I assume you pulled a bullet from the loaded ammo to make sure these are plain-based bullets?)  Finally as already mentioned, these guns require a .432" cast bullet for best results!  I doubt that the  bullets loaded in your high-performance Buffalo-Bore ammo are over the standard .430" diameter!

Lastly, bullet lubricant plays a huge roll in high-performance ammo and lead bullets.   The very best of bullets, loaded with utmost care and properly sized to the gun won't shoot worth sour apples if lubed with a cheap, innefective bullet lubricant.    This is the reason we shut down production here entirely for three months this last winter when we experienced a bullet lubricant problem.  The bullet and ultimately the ammo is no better than the lubricant used on the bullet!

Hope this helps answer your frustration and questions.

Let us know what you find out about your ammo!

God Bless,

Marshall

Marshall-What a relief to know that the bullet was not BTB manufacture!  I have several hundred of your's on order and am glad that the Buffalobore was not yours due to its performance.  Thanks-Karl

Have you contacted Buffalo Bore (Tim Sundles) and let them know about the problems that you are having?
