Hi everybody, I bought a Chiappa 1892 carbine (16" barrel) in .357 magnum recently and this is my first post :)

I want to change out the standard buckhorn rear sight for something better... it's just not working for me, I struggle to hit something the size of a watermelon even from 50 feet away. Preferably I'd like to have an aperture rear sight but I could live with a scope.

Anybody own a Chiappa and what sights have you put on it?

I like the look of the Skinner sights here:
Barrel Mount

There is a dovetail across the width of the barrel which could take this sight, but I don't know what size of dovetail I have.

I can't see the picture, but an aperture sight anywhere but CLOSE to your eye is slow and confusing and inaccurate. Are there two drilled and tapped holes at the left rear of your receiver? Those are for traditional peep sights by Marbles, Lyman, Williams and others. M86, m92 and M94 sights have same hole spacing but different length of arm to center.

The dovetail is most likely a "3/8 inch" which is .375 wide and .093 deep.

Welcome to the shooters forum.

Think I would pass on that particular sight. If the holes are tapped in the receiver think I would prefer that.

I think it will be a problem with that shorter barrel. Otherwise, I have a barrel mounted aperture on a 22lr.. I find it fast and accurate. It is a little disconcerting initially, but the learning curve was short. A barrel mount worked well on my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. I took it off to mount a scope, not because I had trouble with the sight. The barrel mount appears to work well for some and not so well for others. I have heard from several on both sides of the issue.

Welcome,

I like a large open aperture.

I have an original 1892 winchester. It has a tang mounted aperture. Your receiver is not solid (not like a Marlin 336) so you would have to barrel mount it...would be ok for plinking; but a tang sight would be faster and more accurate.

I have a short barrel (12") Chiappa 1892 in 44 Magnum with a full stock. Mounted a Marbles tang peep on it - the Chiappa is identical to the original 1892, so any tang sight fitting one will fit the other. The Marbles has easy windage and elevation adjustments that stay put when set. The post is far enough from the eye to be safe, even with heavy loads.

Barrel mount peeps work OK...I have an SKS that has a Williams peep in place of the original blade. On a classic rifle like the Chiappa, I'd prefer the looks of a tang sight over the Skinner.

Yes, the Chiappa, unlike the Rossi, has a standard sight dovetail.

Welcome to the board, AirJing2010 ! !

I have 2 different Model 92'a, a .357 & a .45Colt, which I successfully mounted receiver sights onto.

I replaced the bolt-top safety on the .45 with a peep I fashioned from a Skinner LoPro sight (drop-in)

I mounted a Williams 5D-94SE receiver sight atop the receiver sidewalls of the .357 via D/T'n the top of each sidewall for the sight & fashioning a bolt-top safety replacement plug that laid flat enough to zero the rifle with the peep adjusted all the way "down".

My Model 92's have the standard 3/8" wide (front-to-back) barrel dovetail for the rear barrel sight, so instead of buying a commercial slot filler (when I removed the rear sights in favor of a clean peepsight sight picture), I fashioned slot filler blanks from ole, scrounge box, open rear barrel sights.

FWIW, anybody can buy a ready-made drop-in bolt safety replacement peepsight (that turns to also act as a safety) from Steve's Gunz | "The Rossi 92 Specialist"

This is very interesting Shawn. Can you remember the model number? Or anyone else know the model number of sight?
