Military issued I believe 1" square patches when serving during the Viet Nam era. Presently use 1" round patches from ProShot. Some use 22 caliber rimfire patches which I believe are 3/4" round or square in size.

Why not cut a few different sizes and see what works? The thickness of the material you're using for patches and whether it's on a jag or loop might make a difference. It's not the size that matters but how you use it:D
That made me laugh....and of course...I use really big patches;)

I just cut a g.i. large cleaning patch into four squares. just about right for 223 or 22.
