What! My son was shooting my .416 Rigbys when he was 15 and only weighed 165 pounds. It's not that bad. I have two, a No. 1 and a M77 and the No. 1 with my elk load is 325 gr at 2960 fps, well, that one gets your attention but it is not going to knock anyone down, but the M77 with its load of 400 gr. and 2400 fps is a pussycat to shoot.

Save your money in regards to fluting. If anything, if not done correctly, it can ruin a barrel by inducing stress. I have barrels of same profile and the fluted one does not heat up slower or cool down any quicker that I can tell. The only thing fluting does is save weight for a same profile barrel. And steel barrels are nor corrugated cardboard. If you take two barrels of the same profile and flute one of them, it does NOT increase stiffness. Most of what is said about fluted barrels is BS and is done mostly for cosmetic purposes because we all know, if it looks cool it shoots better and we are suckers for looks.
I do hope you will get the best barrel you can afford. Doing a project like this and cheaping out on a barrel is crazy. That is the most important part of the rifle and if you cannot afford to do it right, then wait until you can. Get a Pac-Nor Super Match, Lilja, Kreiger, or other top tier barrel but stay away from the A&B and ERSHAW barrels. They are OK for standard hunting accuracy but when doing a custom gun for a long range shooter, either do it right or don't do it at all. Cheap out on the barrel and your two-thousand dollar custom build will be lucky to hit a fifty-cent piece at 300 yards. Get a good barrel and you can shoot Kennedy's eye out. I've built several long range rifles for personal use and promise you, cheap out on the barrel and you will regret it. JMHO

Nice pistol. I wish Savage would bring back out those Striker pistols. Mine is a .308 stainless that I had a barrel done in .458 SOCOM. Not a long range shooter by any means but a nice pistol to match my ARs in that caliber. It weighs no more than the standard Striker and recoil is minimal. I have a couple of other projects in mind but unless I find another Striker stainless they will have to wait indefinitely.

I have been pondering this for sometime now and would like to hear from others if there are any negatives in doing this project other than spending money.

I am considering converting a 300 Ultra mag model 70 Winchester Classic Stainless into making a 338/300 Ultra mag out of my current rifle. Question is how much more percentage wise will it give in power (if any) over the already produced factory gun of Remington in a 338 Ultra mag?

The 300 RUM necked up to 338 is called the 338 Edge

I love the .338s and that bore size, but why not just keep your
.300. I would think it would handle anything in North America
with no problem. Save up and buy a whole new rifle. Then you
will have two.

Converting the 300RUM

I did the Edge for one reason which is in two parts.
I have subscribed to big bullet diameter moving slow causing serious blunt force trauma and pass through wound channels. I also like fast moving bullets for flat trajectories and hydrostatic shock.

First project putting these two theories together was the 358STA. Absolutely HAMMERS game!
Better quality bullets and more choices caused me to stray into the 338 Realm many many years ago.

A 300 Ultra can not shoot a 300 gr SMK at 2850-3050 FPS> The difference between the 338 Lapua,338RUM and the 338 Edge with the Edge getting the velocity nod is maybe 100-150fps between the 3 with the 338 RUM on the low end.

The barrel on the handgun above is broken in now. The 225 Grain Accubond at 2950 is hitting with a ton of energy at 600 yards which is as far as I will ever shoot a game animal. The I have not taken game yet with this combination, lots have fallen from the same bullet in my 338 WSM and 338 Win Mag. I have a very vivid imagination so thinking of the hunting seasons to come using the Edge is pretty exciting.

I beg to differ the 338 Edge does not have a 100 to 150 FPS velocity advantage ove the 338 Lapua. If fact my load of 92 grains of H-1000 is the exact load that Shawn Carlock uses in his 338 Edge with the 300 SMK, Shawn is the creater of the 338 Edge and the builder of my 338 Lapua

Yes you are correct. The Edge and the Lapua do exceed the velocity of the 338 RUM by that margin in my experience though. There were three cartridges listed in the post.

By Shawns own statement. A number of guys took the 300 RUM case and expanded it to 338 when the 300 RUM first came out. Think we all give Shawn the credit for putting the Edge name to the cartridge though. In the circles I read and travel around in, Shawn probably has done the most to make the Edge famous though.

Realisticly, no animal will know the difference between the three cartridges. They are very close.

Well gents, just so you know, my project did get finished but shooting that puppy is not all peaches & cream from the bench and that is a true fact. It generates close to 60-felt pounds of recoil, which is tuff to deal with at the bench.

I did NOT make a 15 pound rifle out of this project because I planned on using it while hunting. To mean I would be walking up and down mountain benches at elv. from 6 to 9,500 ft. I did that 10-lb rifle deal once or twice in my younger years with a .375H&H and my arms felt like wet string at the end of the day.

I sold this rifle once and traded it back after that, it sits in the vault and in all honesty I don't shoot it much........to much recoil even with a pad or two. Not near as accurate long range as my .300 Win mag of many years pushing a 190 grain bullet. I hate the looks of muzzle brakes so that is not an option for me. Thanks to those that gave me information but I am going to retire to shooting my 6.5/05 and .338/06. Thanks once again to those who posted. TRACER........aka 2BITS.:)
