Hello,

I'm looking to mount a scope on my CZ 550 FS in .308. I have only mounted one scope on anything and that was my CZ 452 Trainer on which I mounted a BSA Sweet 22.

I only rarely hunt, and that is almost exclusively varminting (nutria, coyote & fox) so this will be a paper hunting set up.

My budget is LOW, a decent scope and no more.

Any suggestions?

While I've got 'scope guys,' I'm considering putting a scope on my S&W M&P 15 OR (an AR-15). What would be an appropriate scope for it? If I decide to do this to my AR, it'll be in the future - no time son.

Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving!

The CZ 550 FS is a very nice rifle and deserves some decent glass on top. I've owned three 550s, two were the FS version and they are very good shooters from my experience. That said, I'll make a couple of recommendations for decent quality lower $$ scopes out there now. First, the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32, next the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32. Both those scope can be had with a little online searching for $125-$150. Look on Amazon and check for sales on Midway.

Two more scopes I'll suggest at a bit more $$ are the Leupold Rifleman and Leupold VX1, either one in 2-7x33. These two will run $175-$225 depending on where you look and what sales are kicking in. One more scope I've read about, but not owned is the newly released Sig Sauer Whiskey line, specifically the 3-9x40 model. It has just gone on sale at Academy Sports for $70 off at $129 and I've read some good things about it.

I don't know if you got rings with your rifle, but I did not on either of my 550 FS rifles nor my 550 Carbine. I chose Warne Permanent rings for all three rifles and they are especially made for the CZ 550 rifle. I'd recommend a medium height as the 550 needs the slightly higher mediums for bolt Cycling room even if they are not needed for the objective size.

Good Luck!

My 550 Carbine with a new Leupold VXR 2-7x33 I just installed a couple days ago.

I like the world to be in harmony, so here is what I say:

Get a Primary Arms 4-14*44 FFP, Mil/Mil scope. It is a first focal plane with mildot reticle(cross hair) and 1/10 mil adjustments. Very nice for hunting anything, paper included, as you can adjust your impact correctly at any magnification; or hold by the amount missed at any magnification.
That scope has better glass for very long distance in the day, than the SWFA 3-15HD. The best part of it is that it is $230!

I have a few, and won't go back to a second focal plane for anything.

MUCH obliged, TnHunter!

Could you link me to the appropriate Warne Permanent rings? To further display my ignorance (hey, if you want to know about Byzantine history, surf fishing or some other skill I have you only have to ask! lol), how do I know which rings go with which scope?

Darkker,

Is that English? FFP? Mil/Mil? First focal plane with mildot reticle(cross hair) and 1/10 mil adjustments? SWFA 3-15HD?

Also, The 550 FS is by no means a super long range rifle, and $230 is a bit high for my budget.

What do you mean by a 'second focal plane?'

DON'T GET ME WRONG! I appreciate your advice. I just don't understand!

Yours,
Pan

These seem to be the least expensive. If there's a problem with this place, I'm quite sure Midway will carry them as well. Any of the scopes I referenced should fit fine with these medium height rings. I've not had a problem using mediums on all my 550s, including with a 30mm scope with fairly large Ocular bell and a Zeiss which also has a fairly large ocular bell.

Good Luck!

If you are hunting deer at 150 yards. Then a 2x7x will do fine.

IMPOSSIBLE to beat a Bushnell on a
the budget side. Trophy 3x9x are selling less than $100. These are good glass and rugged scopes. I've shot them on 416/338/9,3 no problems.

The Leupold/redfield rev 2-7x is selling for about $170. good glass and rugged mechanicals.

My CZ CZ 550 FS is wearing a 35 year old Leupold vx-2 2-7x. In the last 12 month it has killed one whitetail, black bear, and an elk. I has travelled about 3000 miles in planes, trucks, and ATv.

Pan,

If a scope DOESN'T specifically state, then that is code for Second Focal Plane, or, SFP. What that means is that the reticle stays the same size, at any magnification. The problem with that, is that the reticle actually changes size, RELATIVE to the target, as you zoom in our out. So judging how far you are off your mark on the target, can be difficult without going to the target and measuring. So if you are trying to adjust or have your turret match your reticle, that can ONLY be at one power which is usually max.

A First Focal Plane, FFP, scope has its reticle grow or shrink with zoom. However that means relative to your target, it is ALWAYS the same size. Makes range estimation quite easy, and for targets makes correcting easy.
However far off the mark on your target you were, you can adjust the turrets or hold; at ANY magnification. That is not the case with a SFP scope, you are guessing.

Don't get down on the rifle, unless you KNOW it's a clunker. I did a post a few years ago you may want to read about a Sporter rifle at distance.

A good marksman can do wonders with a clunker rifle.... I have faith in you!

The 550fs has a 19mm grooved receiver so scope rings are hard to find. You should get the scope first and then the rings to try to get the scope as low as possible without contacting any metal. the bolt handle clearance can be a problem with scopes having a large ocular/power ring.

Best value???

With some diligent searching, hands down USED would be the way to go, IMO. I've seen some VERY good scopes go for crazy low prices. There are plenty of "mid range" brands that are better quality than what you are looking for that may be too much $ new, but affordable used. Brands like Leupold with an unconditional tranferable warrany, it's hard to go wrong. (NEW) I still have/use my Nikon buckmaster 3x9 20+ years later. The Burris fastfire??? was just OK. A 308 sounds a bit big/heavy recoiling for "NOT HUNTING, or varmints". If you are going to use the 308 for LONG RANGE, I'd suggest bumping up the scope quality.
