Hello from Scotland

I now find my self in the situation of wether to hold off and wait for a Marlin .444 outfitter or to buy the second hand marlin .444 ss.

I chose the outfitter as i wanted a wood land Deer gun with peep sights , fast handling and handy in size.

Now ive found this second hand ss 22" micro groove barrel and pistol grip, which needs the stock stripped and refinished (no problem) And it is without doubt a bargin.

yet im now completely confused ? Will the 22" micro barrel like the 325 gn cast bullets i was planning to use in the outfitter ?

Will i find my self regretting buying the ss ?

BUY both i here you say , well basically we are only allowed ONE gun of each calibre by the police.

Decisions, decisions, it was easier when i had only one choice !

Will let you know what happens- IF i ever make a decision !

I would buy the SS with the 22" barrel.
I like the pistol grip stock.
I have allways worried that you could not reliably and safetly meet your velocity and energy requirements. The 22" barrel would assure of exceeding the energyvelocity requirement with 300+ grain bullets.
I do not like the ports on my Guide Gun and Timber Carbine. They are very hard on shooting partners!
You can fit the bullets to your throat and bore, so the micro-groove rifling should not be a problem.
I like the longer barrel for swinging on moving game, but thats an individual thing.

Marlin took the hint. The 2002 Guide and Outfitter don't have ported barrels. Only the 44 mag and 357 have the ported barrels. I think they also went to microgroove rifling in the last two calibers.

Hi Englander,

Here is an uninformed opinion(never owned a Marlin....just a "Big Bore 94" and a standard 94), but I thought I would put my 2 cents in. I say, you've waited this long......wait for what you truly want. I have made rash decisions with guns and regretted it. But, according to Slim and others, you wouldn't be making a mistake with the one that's available...kind of a Win/Win situation. But, if it was me........ I would definitely wait if you like the shorter gun with the different rifling style. Just my two bits. Best to you and good luck.

Great problem you have. I have the same 2 bits as CD Cash, though. Yours is a really a new-used question. Both models will do what you need.

Disregarding cost, you'll make a nice, new, fresh one all "yours."

This is one of those hard decisions that are fun...kind of like deciding over two job offers.

My only input on this topic would be regarding microgroove rifling. I own a Marlin in 375 Win which has this type rifling. It is a terrible fouler...copper or lead. The tooling marks are horrendous. Personally I don't intend to buy another rifle with microgroove. This is just my opinion. There are others here who have had much better luck and you may too.

I'd go for the Outfitter.

Englander,
The used SS with a 22" MicroGrooved barrel probably has a 38" twist.
