Do you limit your travel to states that recognize your own state's CCW? I know I do.

With the possible bill coming up to make all CCW licenses recognized in all states that offer them, I was wondering if that would make a huge difference in visiting other states for other people?

I for one, would not even go through NJ or NY because of their gun control rules, as an example.

When I lived in MA, even though I did not own any gun or desire one, the gun control laws greatly irked me and was one of the things that made me wish I didn't live there. Now that I own a gun, I wouldn't even want to visit or drive through unless they recognized my license.

Just wondering if this is an extreme view or a common one.

I don't care to travel to non gun friendly places either. Fortunately my CCW permit is a retired LEO permit which is good nationwide and I also carry a Deputy Sheriffs commission which also gives me nationwide CCW coverage. I just hate dealing with the ignorant yahos at the airports in those type of places.

I'm like you guys, I try not to travel though states that don't. Nebraska doesn't reconize my SD CC permit so I travel through Wyoming when headed to Colorado. To the east of me I'm pretty well screwed since Minnestoa, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio don't have reciprocity.

Nebraska recognizes all CCW's from states that have as stringent or more stringent guidelines for CCW.I am retied LEO and don't worry too much about where I am going. However if I was not Ret LEO I would not limit my travels to any great extent because I may tarvel through some unfriendly state. The odds of needing to shoot my way out of trouble is pretty slim in any case.

I absolutely plan my trips thru states that respect my right to protect myself. If I have to travel thru a state that destroys that right I try to spend NO MONEY there, I don't buy gas or food or get a hotel room, until I'm in a socially responsible state.

However, some states that don't allow me to carry concealed do allow me to have a loaded gun on the car seat. go figure.

Grizz

I always thought it would be good to make a map like the cc.org map that had marriage laws like the gun laws. You know, in some states you are married, they reciprocate your wedding license, but others don't. In some states you can drive any hours but in others you can't drive more than 200 miles in a day. The same bewildering balderdash we face just crossing the continent....

I won't refuse to go to states that don't honor my CCW, but I generally avoid Illinois. This is primarily because the closest bit of Illinois is East St. Louis, and if you're not aware, that's a rather dangerous area. I won't go there unarmed.
On the other hand, if I were driving across the country, I'd plan my route to go through states where I can carry.

That's me - no money spent in an anti-State....

> So, does that mean you would never come to Canada,

There is a difference between limiting citizens and limiting non-residents and aliens on what they can possess when passing through their borders, especially guns.

Though knowing a country bans its' citizens from owning handguns would certainly mean I would not want to grace that country as a tourist spending money. I rather go to Texas.

Just a small correction on what looks like a misunderstanding. Canadians can own and shoot handguns, and there are very many who do. Concealed carry, however, is almost non-existent except for law enforcement.

Even then, how many police carry concealed? Most carry openly.

@Jbee - I understand being disgusted with Canadian gun laws (I'm the one that has to live with them ;) ) but not visiting here because of that sort-of lets the anti's win, doesn't it?

There are lots of hunting, outdoor, and shooting opportunities here, and lots of kind people that are like-minded as you. Limiting yourself over gun laws limits your potential for new experiences, new friends, and limits the chance for you to participate in gun law changes.

For example, if store owners had friendly gun enthusiastic tourists (Americans and Canadians alike) spend money, wouldn't they be more accepting of gun culture and therefore gun law reform?

My $0.02.

Edit: That said, I DO want to visit America and try handgun hunting! Traveling away from restrictive gun laws is sort of similar to what we're talking about I guess. :p

FWIW: As a vendor at computer shows in Toronto I have been to Canada a few times. The only problem I had was having to remove my studded tires at customs before entering Ontario. Luckily I always assume the worse and carry two spares in case I run over something on one side of the vehicle. I am such a prepper :D

All I lost was three hours since one was buried under stock and computers in the van.

On the plus side they were not needed, they had such good road upkeep in Canada, even in the middle of the storm we were in. Then I knew I really was in another country when the women leave their jackets AND pocket books by the front door in restaurants. ;)

My post was longer, I pared it down so it would not be political since I said I would never visit the UK because of their hand gun laws, but, I would think about Canada as long as I could drive through Vermont and not New York or New Jersey to get there.

I was just wondering if supporting the new bill/law coming up was worth it $ and if others felt like I do or if my view is outside the main stream of gun owners and not worth pursuing or researching further.

Well I can't carry a gun in Ireland or hunt there but it's still worth going for the Guinness, my opinion ;)

I have held a Kentucky Concealed Carry License for around fifteen years. I had to take a couple of days worth of classroom instruction (heavy on gun law, where you can and can't carry) and undergo a State Police Background Check.
Kentucky has reciprocity with most States that issue Carry Permits. I just have to go the KSP website and there is a map of where I can carry.
And I choose to avoid the States that do not recognize my 'ticket' if at all possible. They want to deny my right to protect myself and my family, they can do it without my money!

No, if I did I would never get to visit my son in CA. And that is not going to happen.
