Just peachy.

Exactly what we need, a bunch of macho posers struttin their stuff with big irons on their hips to go with the testicles hanging from their trailer hitches. What's next? Soccer moms with va-jay-jays dangling from the bumpers of their mini vans? This coming from a pro gun cc holder, the first C stands for concealed, the way it should be, unless out from towns/cities IMO. We can already open carry if it's a legal hunting weapon & actively hunting, & CC if it isn't or when anywhere else. I know "shall not be infringed" is involved, but don't want the bad that will come with the good. What we have here now works fine for me. People have been open carrying in rural areas for years without raising too many eyebrows.

I once shared this same opinion on another forum and suffered an obscene amount of vitriol as a result. Hopefully this forum is a little more civilized and people here are more willing to hear divergent opinions. Good luck.

I love this quote from the article:

"When I am out at Starbucks and there's a cop there with his gun, it's intimidating and it's scary,"
Really? You're afraid of COPS with openly carried firearms? Lady..... you should probably just stay home....

For the record, I was tromping around in Idaho recently while bowhunting. Pretty much EVERYONE had a handgun on their belt or in a shoulder holster, openly displayed, along with their bow, and frankly - no one gave it a second thought. Think I forgot to take my off one night and at dinner with it on my belt.

You'd stop to talk to strangers on the side of the road and literally no one batted an eye. It was just 'normal'.

Folks just are afraid of their own shadows, it would seem.

Oh and by the way we will have open carry in Texas as of Jan 1, 2016. It will be interesting and I predict that the anti-gun DAs in Austin, Dallas, and Harris counties will continue to harass law-abiding gun owners. The other 250-some-odd counties probably won't bat an eyebrow.

I do not wish to be the first person carrying openly that the Austin police encounter. Lawful or not, they have a reputation for harassing gun owners (happened to a friend of mine who just had a rifle laying behind the seat of his truck).

They do not know of the bill of rights? Of course they do - but is carries no weight anymore; or does it?

At the time that concealed-carry was passed in Texas, the DA of Travis County, Ronnie Earle, famously bragged he would prosecute gun owners even if they had a concealed carry license and were abiding by the new law. It was all bluff and bragging, but that sort of line carries well with the Austin voters who are the overwhelming majority of Travis county.

The current Travis County DA, who has spent time in jail on a DUI charge while holding office (!), would in all probability uphold the long tradition that the DA in Travis county is above the law, if the past is any guide.

A friend of mine purchased a hunting rifle (he doesn't even hunt) on the whim it might be a good deal and had it laying behind the seat of his extended cab truck. Some nosy person looked in the truck, saw the rifle, and called the cops. Middle aged guy, driving a company truck with his company shirt on, middle of the day, and gets surrounded by 6 or 8 cops who try to bully him into losing his temper so they can seize the rifle and arrest him. He stood his ground (politely) and basically told them to get lost. A sad waste of police resources and in most departments, it would have taken all of 30 seconds to determine he was not a threat to public safety, and perhaps a polite suggestion to not leave a rifle in plain view lest it be stolen.

But this is Austin, the left-wing hippie capitol of Texas. You would not believe some of the crap in our communist rag newspaper.

Amazing, the arrogance of law enforcement where "I am the law" still rules. Something is not right and has not been for a while.

The more open carry the better. People/society need to be desensitized to the sight of a gun. We need to help those suffering from Hoplophobia. I would generally carry concealed, but some open carry here, and I say good.

I lived in Az for several years where open carry was the norm, the only time I carried open was during hunting season. When driving my Jeep on the highway with an open top people from out of state would look at me as if I was going to commit a crime. In Ca I had a CCW but I was a little uncomfortable when I was carrying because with a permit comes a lot of responsibility. I now no live in Montana where open carry is common and it is not uncommon to see someone in public with a side arm and we have very little crime, could be we don't have a lot of people, but the attitude is very different here from any place I have lived.

A little cosideration for others can't hurt.

Face it some people will always have a fear of guns and we will never be able to convert all of them. Some peoples fears are rational, others may not be. Showing them a little sympathy and consideration, by not rubbing their nose in it, even though it may be our right, may help those on the fence not view us as selfish inconsiderate knuckle dragging Neanderthals, (others opinions, NOT MINE). Victims or family members of gun crime, violence, rape, suicide etc may have a very real & logical fear of guns, or just a painful reminder of their event at the sight of one. My Mother fell into this category. She knew I was a gun guy, never tried to stop me, and I in turn tried not to cause her any distress by parading my guns around in front of her, it wasn't hard to do, just common decency.

I once spoke to a homosexual individual who detested wedding rings. I asked why once and he said that it made him feel uncomfortable since he couldn't marry (at the time). To my knowledge nobody ever removed their rings to make him feel better. If I felt the need to open carry everyday than the only place I would not carry is in someones home or a businesses that specifically requested I not. In the end concealed carry is better, but I'm not going to neglect wearing a wedding ring to make others fell better. YMMV

I advocate open carry and concealed carry for all States. Also, there should be no required training to carry either way. Of course, it's ideal that anyone carrying a firearm would desire to be trained in its use and on legal issues.

Generally, in open carry States, there is no need to attend a class or get a certificate or "license", and that is how it should be. Yet, for concealed carry, there is a class, fee, test, license, etc., which amounts, in part, to a registration.

As I've always said, if my wife buys a gun, and ammo, and goes out to the vehicle and loads it (or in the gun store if permitted there), she should be able to wear it openly or put it under her shirt, or in her purse, without any additional fees, training, or licensing.

Open carry is good. Concealed carry is good.

Also, while I recognize a person being offended is no more than perception, when people vocalize they are offended, I become offended. Vocalization of your private fears and desires deserves a "so what" and a wave of the backhand.
