I put together the set of P&R model S&W 629's during the past year. The set contains a 4 inch, 6 inch, and an 8 3/8 inch.
:D
Here they are
4 inch barrel made in 1981 (unfired)

6 inch barrel made in 1980 (excellent)

8 3/8 barrel made in 1981 (unfired)

Nice!

At the risk of exposing (more of) my ignorance, what is "P&R"?

P&R is Pinned and Recessed. S&W has always screwed their barrels on wrong, they will come unscrewed under bullet torque so they pinned them (drilled across the frame and barrel and inserted a pin, see above photos) up until about '86 or so. Then they started using loctite on them. Also, they would drill the chambers with a recess for the rim of the case to sit in. It makes for a clean look but its not a strength issue.

The poster above is right in some regards except for the date when S&W discontinued these features. S&W counderbored the cylinders so that the head of the case fit inside the cylinder so the whole cartridge was inside the cylinder. This was only done for magnum calibers and 22 caliber handguns. The barrels were pineed as stated above and both features were discontinued in 1982.

There are a lot of S&W collectors and shooters that will only buy S&W revolvers that were P&R in the cases of magnums and 22's or with pinned barrels on the calibers where the cylinders were not recessed. The P&R S&W's in great shape sell for less then the new S&W revolvers and have actually been going up in price when compared to used S&W revolvers in the same condition made after 1982.

Ah. Thanks. I'd heard of pinned and recessed, just didn't make the connection...
