I just bought a Remington .308 and am looking for the best scope I can get for $300 - $350. I'll be using the rifle mainly for target practice - 200 - 300 yards. I know that Leupold & Zeiss are good brands and, as a photographer, I know that Nikon usually has good optics.

For about $300., I think the best scope is the Elite 4200 3-9x40. This model is by far the least expensive 4200 model, I think because it uses the same basic design as the popular Elite 3200 3-9x40, rather than being a completely different platform and then simply adds upgraded coatings to the glass. For example, the Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 model with the same reticle sells for $429. I own both the 3200 3-9 and 4200 3-9 and the 4200 is a very good piece of glass, especially for the price it can be found at. Some places carry it priced as low as $270. or so. Not quite the equal of a $399/Conquest 3-9x40 to my eye, but pretty darn close.
