I just got my little Buffalo Carbine back from the smith,where he re-chambered it to the 460 S&W. I ordered all the stuff to make ammo for it while it was in the shop. I am going to spend all day loading for all three calibers and the wife and I are going out to our range tomorrow to get some results.I am hopeful that if it will shoot a 2" group @ 100yds. I will post the results for anyone that is interested.......

I'm assuming it was originally chambered in .454 Casull and the 'smith knows it can take .460 pressures.

So my question is about the rifling. S&W has gain-twist rifling in their .460 to more slowly bring the heavy bullet up to rotational speed without, for lack of a better word, smearing it. What is your rifling twist?

Congrats PD on the "new" 460!! I haven't shot mine since the range trip with the 250gr SST, but it shot just ok with Lil'gun, next load will be 2400 with the SST, I've seen it used with excellent results in the 20" Encore Khathdin which has a 1:18" twist, the H&R is 1:20". I've also shot the 200gr Hornady factory ammo which chrono'd at ~2850fps, but accuracy wasn't quite as good as the 250gr SST load. Looking forward to your range report.

MAC, the 460S&W has a SAAMI MAP of 65kpsi, same as the 270 Win which is factory chambered from H&R, the 460 case head is just .008" larger than the 270W, the CR-45LC BC carbine uses the same SB2 frame as the Handi which is also factory chambered in 500S&W which has a .530" case head and SAAMI MAP of 60kpsi, although operates at about 53kpsi. There are several members at GBO with 460S&W as well as 454 Casull H&Rs, they work fine.

I bet that makes for a real shoulder thumper! I like the way the those carbines look, I thought one in 357 or 44 mag would be cool with a shorter barrel. The 460 is close enough to 45-70 power that I would rather have something a bit heavier, but that doesn't mean it's not an awesome idea.

actually with the pacmeyer recoil pad I can't tell it from a 20ga. 185gr. barnes hp 42gr.#9 2 1/2-3" @ 100 had some 200gr. hor. flex tips loaded with 38gr.lil'gun to try and the rain started had to run for it.......

That's good news about the recoil. One real advantage of the 460 over the 45-70 is the lighter bullets available. I have read people asking over and over for sources of lighter .458 bullets. The rain missed us here in N Alabama, at least today, although my wife said she did drive through some on the way back from Nashville.

If I am not mistaken Barnes makes a .458 in 250gr.thats the lightest I know of.............
