T/C Contender, 7-30 Waters, 14" Super, bull barrel. Oh, wait...that's the hand gun I carry when I'm hunting deer WITH a handgun!

When I'm hunting deer with a bow or rifle, I don't carry a handgun. I hunt in "good" neighborhoods. :D

During modern firearms season, I hunt with a revolver, so another handgun seems redundant. But during primitive firearms season, I carry a Taurus compact .44, weighing 34oz. It is legal here as a "put-down" gun, but frankly, here in Methlahoma, it's just prudent!

I'd feel naked without a snubbie .357 in the pocket. Doesn't serve much purpose for deer hunting, although I have put down a couple that were still 'wiggling.'

That opportunity did let me know what my carry ammo does at short range in living tissue.

There's usually a big-bore revolver in the truck close by. Wading through the jungle of briars sometimes isn't convenient with a rifle, when you are looking for something that should be dead, but might not be.

I usually carry a nine shot 22 LR snub nose in my hunting bag to get rid of wild dogs and feral cats that tend to show up when I am deer hunting.. On my belt I normally carry a Ruger BH in 44 special or 44 mag. I have used my 44s to kill deer that are extremely close to my deer stand. Like MikeG, I feel nekkid if I don't have a revolver or pistol somewhere on me.

I carried my Stainless Old model vaquero in 45Colt. 17grs of 2400 under a 250gr XTP is there for critters that come within 30yds of me. Further than that, the rifle does the work.

I occasionally carry one of my single action army clones in .44 special of .45 colt - but not very often. I'm not too worried about running into bad guys, and my long gun is a .44 magnum carbine, so I just carry a couple .44 special rounds to use in case a point blank finishing shot is necessary.

For nearly 30 years my Dan Wesson 357 was my primary deer gun. Eyes old now so I moved up to a rifle then a scoped rifle and a muzzle loader with peep sight. I still carry a 44 or 41 mag on my belt when I am in the woods.

Both rifles are single shots and if I need a gun after that shot I like something in my hand that will go bang more than once.

I have always carried some sort of handgun while deer hunting.Started out with a Ruger Bearcat when I was a youngster.Next was a Ruger Security Six 357.A Ruger Old Army till I almost started a wildfire finishing off a deer in the tall dry grass.Carried a Witness 9mm and a Colt Model 357 a while.I bought a 50th Anniversary Ruger Single Six and carried that for a few years. Now I carry my S&W Cheifs Special or my Witness 45 auto, usually the Smith its pretty handy.I usually load a shot load for snakes for the first round up.Killed many rattlesnakes with a handgun over the years.I keep the Witness 45 or one of my 41 mags handy while in camp and close to my sleeping bag just for larger varmints that may show up.

The times when I do, I carry a S&W P22. Having carried a SBH/BH from time to time, they are not actually convenient while carrying a rifle, and they aren't needed.

I've used it on foxes, and occassionally on a couple squirrels for the pot pie.

Like broom_jm, I don't hunt where I need a backup for the bad people. If I did, I'd carry my Springfield Compact.

A 1911 goes with me almost everywhere, huntings no exception. Even when I'm handgun hunting I'll have a 1911 somewhere on my person. Not that I expect trouble it just seems prudent to be prepared if trouble finds me.
