Could a New handi rifle barrel be fitted to an old New England Arms reciever.

You are suppose to send the action in to New England firearms (Marlin) to have a new barrel fitted. It is very cheap to do.
If you go to their web site you can look at what your rifle is, look at the serial number and see what they can fit to it.
I suppose that the answer to your question is yes, but it depends on the version of your rifle for what they will fit to it.
I have been thinking of seeing about sending my .223 in and getting a .410 and 243 or 30-06 barrel for it. Either would be a great truck gun for coyotes and the likes.

NEF/H&R/Remington is very particular about what actions they will fit new barrels to, although if you have one of the new(er) SB2 frames, the options are many. http://www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.asp

As 45/70Sharps stated, they are very inexpensive and, in many cases, probably the best value in a single-shot action that you can easily switch barrels on. Fun little guns.

Serial number must begin with either "N" or "H" if memory serves otherwise its not there frame.

Frames are sent to the H&R(not NEF) plant in Ilion NY which is a Remington facility, not Marlin! H&R won't fit any of the * marked high pressure barrels to any SB2 rifle frame made before 2000. You can determine when your frame was made by checking the build year code list in the FAQs and help sticky in the H&R forum at GBO. http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php/board,126.0.html

You'll also find instruction to fit second hand barrels yourself, due to H&R's new fitting($25) and shipping fees, a $96 factory fitted accessory rifle barrel will cost about $160 by the time you pay to send you frame and stock in and pay their fees, tax and return shipping($19). On top of that, Marlin hasn't made any H&R barrels since last year, and won't be for another month or so according to Madison Customer Support (866-776-9292), they're out of most accessory barrels right now, and don't anticipate having any until late March or April. The good news is Ilion is building a new barrel mfrg facility which will go online later this year, no more waiting for Marlin to make them.

Here's a little more info on accessory barrels you won't find on their website...

They will fit 357mag and 44mag barrels to SB1 shotgun frames made 1987 and later. Those two chamberings have been factory available on SB1 shotgun frames since 2008, they're also factory available in combos, 357/20g rifled and 44/12ga rifled, offered initially to target the Indiana pistol chambered deer hunter market.

They WON'T fit any rifle barrels other than the 357 and 44 mag to any SB2 rifle frame made '96 to '99, they will fit shotgun barrels to those frames tho.

Your right. I couldn't remember the chain of buying out that went on from the old original to where they are now.
I just checked their website and looked at the serial numbers on mine to determine that I could get what I wanted for them.

Good shooting guns for the money.
They've gone up quite a bit since I bought my first one new in.... 95? I paid somewhere between $150 and $200 back then for a new one at the local store.
The 223 that I bought back then has the right serial number to be fitted to the new barrels, or at least it was a match somewhere around a year ago.
