Greetings All,
Last friday was one of my better Handloading/Shooting related days. To start off with, while visiting one of my local scrounge haunts at work, they had about 300 lbs. of WW for me! That's bullet casters gold to me.After loading it up in the car, my day finished up uneventfully, except for the beautiful weather, 65 degrees, sunny, no humidity.
As I got home from work, It just felt like a shooting day. Know what I mean ? The trigger fingers itchin' to do some squeezin'. I had a couple hours before I had to pick up my daughter, so off to the range.
I had 5 goals that day at the range. Try out 3 different loads, for 3 different guns, sight in my new SBH Hunter, and fireform 100 Remington .30-30 cases to .375 win.
The first load I tried was a .30-30 plinker load that I got from Marshall. It consists of a Lyman 115 gr. FN PB cast bullet over 7.0 grs. Blue Dot. These little babies clocked out at 1260 fps from my Marlin 336 and grouped into 1" at 50 yds. All I could ask for, for 20 shots !
The second load, also gratis from Marshall, was for my .35 Whelen. It consists of a 210 gr RCBS FN GC cast bullet over 63.0 grs. 748, Rem. brass, WLRP. This load clocked out at over 2700 fps from my Ruger 77 MK II and grouped into 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 " for 5 shots at 100 yds. Man !, so far, so good !
Lastly, I've been working up loads for my Marlin .375. Again, with Marshall's input, I came up with a load of 39.0 grs. of WC 680 over a WLRP with a 270 gr. RCBS FN, stuffed in a fireformed .30-30 case. I got 2200 fps and groups of 5 clustered into 1 1/2 " at 100 yds. At this point, I'm floating off the ground. Three rifles down, time to go shoot the SBH Hunter.
My main purpose was to just get the SBH Hunter on paper, as this is my first scoped handgun. A 2X Leupold scope was installed, 30 oz. Wolff trigger spring, hammer strut polished along with all contacting moving parts. My first 12 shots were 1/2" right of the bullseye and measured 1.2" vertical by .85" horizontal at 25 yds. The load consisted of a 330 gr. LBT LFNDCGC cast bullet over 20.0 grs. H110 for a clocked velocity of just under 1300fps.This, with an unlapped barrel. Needless to say, I was one happy camper.
Lastly, I fireformed 100 Rem. .30-30 cases, to .375 win., using Marshall's method in the Tips section. Only one casualty, which was my fault as I cycled the case into the barrel edge, splitting the case. Still, not bad.
By now, some of you may have noticed a pattern. If you guessed Marshall, you're absolutely right ! From reading this website, and phone conversations with him, I've picked up some super information. The results speak for themselves.
In closing, it was a great day at the range on a beautiful day that I won't forget. Thank you, Marshall for all the great info. You are doing many reloaders, like myself, a wonderful service with the website. I consider you a true gentleman and friend. God bless.
