My pre-64 30-30 locks up quite hard to lock up when actuating the lever to load another round. it does this both with the factory loaded 150 or 170 grain bullet. Short of dissassembly, are there any points to check before trying to find a good gunsmith?

The one thing that comes immediately to mind is to give the bore and chamber a good scrubbing. I own several M94's and none of them lock up hard.

I agree with the others that a good cleaning is worth a try. Pay particular attention to the back of the chamber, where there is a recess for the case rim to go into. A small bit of crud there will make any ammo chamber hard.
