Hey all, I inherited this bolt action rifle from my father. He didn’t ever seem to mention he owned it or tell anyone what it was prior to his passing, it was one of many guns I received from him. The closest thing to what I’ve seen on the internet was a M1917 Enfield 30-06. However it appears that it’s missing the sights obviously and has a newer updated stock. Any information would be helpful. I think it would be a great gun to take hunting if it is a 30-06.

More and better pictures would help. From what I can tell from one picture, it looks like a kitchen table sporterized 1917.

That's either a P-14 or P-17. The maker's name is on the front ring. The rear bridge 'ears' have been ground off. You can use it to hunt with but it could be an expensive proposition getting sights back on it. That 'birdbath' in the back needs filling to mount a scope. That most likely has a two groove barrel and many were in rough shape. Those rifles in military dress were $10.95 each by mail order in the early '60s.

Thanks all for your input. Here’s some more pictures. The only stamps I’ve seen is the ball of fire looking thing and could barely see a US stamp near the chamber.

Under the flaming bomb US acceptance mark are (were) a few numbers. Thats the date the barrel was made.
For some reason the front ring was ground off and the markings mostly gone. It had to be Remington, Winchester or Eddystone. I'd bet its an Eddystone by the serial font and the birdbath, but it could be Winchester made.
The stock is very odd for a P-17 because they deeply inletted the bottom front tang which straightens the bottom line of the fore-end. If it has a black plastic butt plate the stock maker's name might be on it. Bishop, Fajen, Roberts, Royal, Herters?

This was a US Model 1917 rifle in 30 caliber. It was rebuilt - it sports a WW2 era replacement High Standard barrel, The rear sight portion of the receiver has been ground off - zero collectability. The barrel has even been shortened to removed rear sight cutouts in barrel. A shooter.
