I have done a good bit of comparisons on different semi autos and and my final 2 in a polymer is either a Glock 40(full size) and the Springfield XD(M)/XD 40.
I like both but having two kids the safety features on the XD makes me feel a little more at ease . You can never be too safe in my oppinion and I am very anal about weapon safety.....with that said what are your pros and cons on the XD or both.
I did do some searching on here and read some takes but if you dont mind I would like some feedback on reliability.I plan on it being a carry and target shooting. Thanks,Phillip

I really like how the XD feels and it shoots just as well. I skipped buying it though and bought a Ruger 944 instead for a simple reason. It has a thumb safety and I considered that vital since I carry all the time, especially with one in the chamber when out and about.

Around the house and kids, I usually keep the chamber empty. That way even if they get the gun off me while I am sleeping (never discount kids removing things from Daddy, so I usually sleep on that side) they can't rack it. I just could see one gripping it, or my body against the grip, and a pre-teen pulling an exposed tripper while playing on me.

Mostly the thumb safety is to negate any carelessness on my part and accidentally killing someone outside my house. Especially if I am working/walking with one in the chamber or have to confront someone with my finger near the trigger.

In the area of after market add-ons such as lasers and night sights, there are many more for the XD (and Glock) and cheaper then for the Ruger series.

What I have noticed about the the Glocks on other boards and our own local police departments, they seem to have a LOT of accidental discharges. I think it was two years ago, a police instructor killed a police student because of it. Though they later found he violated many procedures and basically said he was an idiot, sure a web search would bring it up.

A lot of people like the Glocks because of no safety and the double stage trigger. I liked the XD better just for feel and the grip safety, it is harder to snag the trigger AND push on the grip. I think the combination of one in the chamber and poorly designed holsters (the trigger snags on something) is the main cause of the Glock ADs = user error.

The only note I would make about the Glocks is there seems to be an issue of using lead only nose bullets in them. I have run just about everything through my Ruger including the cheapest lead nose reloaded cartridges.

jbee...thanks for your input...I really like the XD as far as handling and even looks go.Its a nice package deal with all that comes with it.The biggest thing though(between the 2)is the safety features on the XD.
Reliabilty is a must also...I havent heard any negative issues on the XD so far.I know anything man made will have tendicies though but the less the better. It will be on my side whenever possible. Thanks again...Phillip

A lot of folks really like the Glocks, and as a former Glock owner, I'm not sure why.

Six months ago I purchased a Springfield XD, in .40 S&W, the ultra compact model, with factory night sights. I absolutely love the pistol, which fits my hand perfectly, with an outstanding trigger. It is a great concealed carry gun; weight, power, balance, concealability, capacity, etc.

I did a bunch of comparison shopping (for once) and it came down to the XD, or M&P. With the same options, the XD was 200 Obamabucks cheaper.

There is no such thing as "one pistol fits all," so what works for me, won't necessarily work for others.

I own a .40 XDM and love it. I owned a glock subcompact 9mm and got rid of it bc of the crappy trigger. The best explanation for a glock trigger that I have heard is likening it to dragging a cat across shag carpet by the tail....
That being said, my cousin is a LEO and loves his full size glock and has no complaints about the trigger.
I also like the replaceable back straps on the XDM to change the hand ergonomics depending upon the shooter. Not a single misfeed with mine yet in 165 or 180gr offerings.

Just my .02

I have the XD 45 compact. I prefer the smaller grip size to the larger Glock. Also prefer the trigger pull on XD. The XD is available with a slide safety too but you may have to look a long time to find someone who stocks it or you might order one that way. I tried to order one with the slide safety last year and was told that the wait time might be this year before it arrived. I still have not seen one with the slide safety on a dealer shelf.

I own and carry and XD-40 4" (not "M"). I prefer a gun without a safety and the trigger and grip angle of the Glock never suited me. I also looked a the M&P-40 at the time and I picked the XD based on the trigger.

My XD is either on my hip or in the safe. I have five kids, and all of them get the safety lecture repeatedly and all of them, down to the 4yo, has fired a gun a the range. I trust them around firearms, but the consequences are too great, and so it goes in the safe.

No thumb safeties for me on a carry piece, thank you very much. Never saw a need for one (except for a cocked and locked 1911).

Safeties on a carry piece are just another excuse for unsafe gun handling/storage. JMO.

As far as the XD goes, it has good accuracy, and hasn't had a single failure in ~1,000 rounds.
