im not sure if that 270 is still at cabelas, but the reason i was leaning towards the 270 is because i was afraid of the recoil a 30-06 would produce until this morning i went to the range and i got to shoot my friends 30-06. man was i shaking when i got behind the gun, the reason i was so nervous was because i had seen a couple videos on you tube where people shooting the 30-06 get hit by the scope, but once i squeezed off the first round i realized i had scared my self for no reason the recoil really dont bother me and i must have shot at least 40 rounds trough the 30 and no sore shoulder !!! and my friends dad was telling me that i should get a new rifle because i will know where it has Benn since day 1, and that it will be my baby ( as he was telling me this he keep looking at his winchester m70) and that i will know exactly what has happened to the rifle, and that i wont know that with a a used one. so thats why im choosing between the marlin and the mossberg they both seem like pretty good rifle i just don't know which one to chose

Mr. Ponce,

Of the two you listed, don't even think about getting the Mossberg; the Marlin is the better gun, by far!

If the 270 you looked at is still available, you will one day know enough about guns to absolutely HATE YOURSELF, for not paying $400 to buy it. You don't buy a 270 because it kicks less than another cartridge, you buy it because it's a very useful and effective cartridge. Do yourself a favor and think long and hard about all the "new" things being sold today. You can get the new gun if you prefer, but 10 years from now, you'll look back and second-guess your decision to not pick up that FN Mauser in 270. Mark my words.

I'll echo what broomjm says about that FN Mauser. For about $100 more than the Marlin you'll be getting a lot more gun for the money (I'd still try to talk the price down a bit, just because). The Marlin is a fine gun and may even produce better accuracy than the FN, but there is more to a rifle than raw accuarcy alone (i.e. fit and finish, aesthetics, materials, etc...). I also wouldnt worry myself about not being able to obtain hunting accuracy from the FN, 2 MOA should be entirely possible and more than adequate. Also, the 270 will be every bit as capable of deer hunting as the .30-06.

You mentioned recoil of the -06 being somewhat of a concern for you. Im glad you didnt find it objectionable in the rifle you shot today. I dont know what model rifle you tried today but assuming it was wood stocked and perhaps a bit heavier you will likely notice a difference between it and a synthetic stocked and most likely lighter XL7. Accordingly, recoil will be more stout, perhaps quite a bit so depending on what you shot today, whereas the FN Mauser shouldnt be a concern at all in 270 recoil-wise.

Just some advice from a guy that has passed on some rifles and lived to regret it later.

In my opinion, the 30-06 is in fact advantageous because, if you need or want to, you can load heavier bullets for the 30-06. Chances are more than fair that you'll buy at least one more rifle in the future, if not several, so one way or the other you'll probably end up with rifles in both calibers.

If I were to own but a single big-game rifle, it would be an '06. If I were to own 2, I would prefer something like a 270 and a 338WM, or perhaps even a 25-'06 and a 325WSM...just because I'm weird. :)

If I had $400 to buy a rifle and could choose between the FN Mauser in 270 or anything currently on the market in the $400 price range, I would not hesitate to buy the FN.

Before you actually lay down the $$ to buy the Marlin, just go back to Cabelas and handle the FN .270. Work the bolt. Shoulder the rifle. Run your hands over the nice walnut stock. Work the floorplate. Listen to the fine snick, snick sounds of genuine workmanship with both metal and wood. Then come back here and tell us you like that Marlin more than that FN.

I, for one, will be flabbergasted to see you actually chose the Marlin.:eek:

Son, if your choice is a used FN Mauser in .270 vs a cheap gun such as a Mossberg 4x4 or a Marlin XL7 in .30-06, you should strongly reconsider the FN. As another poster mentioned, after a few years of handling guns, if you don't get the FN, you will be very upset with yourself. If you do get the FN, you will say to yourself "wow, I can't believe I almost bought a new 4x4 or XLT instead of this. I sure dodged a bullet there!" Seriously, it's not a matter of preference, it's a matter of real-world differences in quality. These guns are not even in the same category, and if you can find one for $400, you should get it.

I second the vote for a Weatherby Vanguard / Howa 1500. You just can't go wrong there.

Having purchased both in the past, the .30-06 is preferable to the .270 is recoil is no issue.

Its your money so here, let me decide for you.:p

Go and get that FN before its gone even if you cant haggle them down. At $400 your spending what, $50 more than the Marlin? That aint much this day in age.

If you decide you hate the FN you should be able to get your money back out of it. That wont be the case with the Marlin.

Go back to the shop, close your eyes, and work the bolt on the FN, then work the bolt on the XL7. Shoulder them both, and see which one feels better. You'll notice the stock is very narrow on the Marlin. Do you have any pics of the FN?
