Son, if your choice is a used FN Mauser in .270 vs a cheap gun such as a Mossberg 4x4 or a Marlin XL7 in .30-06, you should strongly reconsider the FN. As another poster mentioned, after a few years of handling guns, if you don't get the FN, you will be very upset with yourself. If you do get the FN, you will say to yourself "wow, I can't believe I almost bought a new 4x4 or XLT instead of this. I sure dodged a bullet there!" Seriously, it's not a matter of preference, it's a matter of real-world differences in quality. These guns are not even in the same category, and if you can find one for $400, you should get it.

well after looking all over the show i did not find anything i really liked so im just going to buy a new gun but im not going to buy the savage edge anymore, im choosing between and moseberg 4x4 or a marlin xl7 what do you guys think i should get ? ohh ya its going to chambered in 30-06

Go back to the shop, close your eyes, and work the bolt on the FN, then work the bolt on the XL7. Shoulder them both, and see which one feels better. You'll notice the stock is very narrow on the Marlin. Do you have any pics of the FN?
