When ever I go out camping, I am always armed. At the time this story takes place, I had with me my Ruger 10-22 rifle. It was always by my side and i never left camp without it. Even in previous trips to the outhouse, I would carry it slung over my shoulder always loaded, always ready. That is until this day.

I do not want to type out the whole thing, if you want to find out more please just go here.

And i never blamed the firearm either!

That was a good story (about a bad event). You sure were lucky after all! Are you able to walk yet?

Oh. And welcome from New Mexico, JYD!

I was shot this last weekend, too!

I was shooting 124gr XTP's out of a Ruger 9mm at a heavy steel target. A tiny fragment came back and hit my left cheek, about an inch under my eye. Suffice to say, I backed up a bit and switched to shooting a lighter, swinging steel target or paper. :)

No real damage done...the piece didn't even stick in my face, just bounced off.

I tried to read the article on the Marine in Texas, got tired of wading thru all the ads. Then I tried to read your shooting artcle and found the same thing.
Tell you what, if you strain out the ads and such and presnt me with an article to read I'm sure I would enjoy it.

So if you had been armed you would have shot back??? It was a simple mistake by a young kid.
I don't think he is saying he would have done it out of any spite. Just that, being shot, it wouldn't be completely unreasonable to have gone that way.

That's a nasty looking wound for something as small as a .22. I sincerely hope you have a quick, and full recovery from it. Would not even want to think of what would have happened if that kid had been shooting a larger caliber gun.

I read both; and with the links and advertisements came away with the impression they are "tall tales".

Most of the wound looks like incisions to open it up and remove the bullet - without nicking the femoral artery. I suspect the bullet hole itself was just a small puncture wound.

In many cases, given that it causes more tissue damage to remove it than the bullet itself caused, surgeons will just leave a .22 LR bullet in place, like they would a small fragment or small piece of shrapnel if it's not going to become a problem.

Marshal, I have seen more than one 22LR wounds. They are scary to look at because they'll travel under the skin and then exit or ricochet of bone or whatever. I saw a fellow's wound from a 22 that hit him in the back above the hip and hit a rib. It must've ricocheted because it drove upward either stopping or exiting near his shoulder. Nasty looking - it looked similar to the OP's wound, as if it had sliced open the whole way or else the doctor did. Maybe it did. And that's not the only one.

I think if it was me in that outhouse, the first thing I'd of thought of was: "Where's my firearm?". It isn;t so much that it's an accident, rather it's that you don;t know it's innocent until the smoke clears, so to speak.

ON EDIT: And as Model 52 says, there're doctor's incisions weighed into the equation too.

True, and as i pointed out, shock does weird things to the brain, at that moment all I wanted to do was protect myself and shoot back, but i believe God had purposely kept me from taking my rifle on that walk, i ALWAYS HAD MY RIFLE... until that 1 time.

I did not have a pic to show, so for an example used a stock pic off Google.

Always armed, always ready

With a 22lr? I'm glad your OK, but even happier you WEREN'T ARMED & shot it out with a kid. I blame the father for poorly supervising the kid, and some blame to you for not letting people discharging firearms nearby aware of your presence. The kid deserves a trip to the woodshed for sure, but so does the Father. An inexpensive Loud whistle weighing less than an ounce and costing less than 5$ is something that is never too heavy or large to ALWAYS have with you, can be heard very far off, people pay more attention to a whistle than a gunshot often. They may be useful for signaling for help, to let others know of your presence and to scare off animals/ poachers/ trespassers. A toot and a wave would have prevented the entire event. One could even stop a crime, be it mugging/ purse snatching/ rape, criminals just don't want ANY attention and loud noises upset ANY animals including humans. As a bonus you won't be arrested for brandishing or blowing a whistle at someone (for just cause), NO special licence or permit is needed, you really don't need to worry about locking it up or it falling into the wrong hands.

Well sir, I change my tune. I think NSB nailed it - that story is to draw attention to your site.

Nothing in your original post OR in the article says anything about it happening 20 years ago. In fact, unless I'm a fool, everyone in here is led to believe this just happened last week! And.... why use a generic picture from Google to show a wound that didn;t occur to you?
Nothing in your post or article evens infers that the picture was not available. I guess I am a fool for seeing a wound entirely healed from an accident occurring a few days ago. Sucker!

I think sir, after leading us down that path, that the entire story is untrue, including your thanking the Lord. Why use God to dress up a story that is already suspect and may be entrely false? This is not the forum for your stories.

ON EDIT: I'll tell you how to maybe exonerate yourself. Print this page. Pull your pants down. Hold the printed page near the wound. Take a picture. Post it in this thread.

Completely agree with this post. I read this last night and didn't post though cause the picture threw me off. I spent 25 years working in the medical field, mostly hospital, and have seen a few people come into the E.R with 22 cal gunshot wounds. Had one guy come in shot twice with a 25acp and in all occasions the entry wounds were the same size as the bullet diameter, some discoloration around the entry wound, and not much bleeding even except on the inside where they bounced around and tore stuff up. Hopefully this thread will be closed quickly !!!

Wait a minute. That picture is a photo of someone else? And this incident happened in '94? The BS is piling up. I could tell you about my much more interesting experience of being shot with a 9mm in the leg in 1976 but if I did I would make clear from the beginning it was long time ago and I wouldn't use a photo of someone else's wound.

I can understand you using a stratagem for getting us to read your blog. I read it, scanned it is more accurate and found your prose nearly as painful as a GSW.
