I was shot this last weekend, too!
I was shooting 124gr XTP's out of a Ruger 9mm at a heavy steel target. A tiny fragment came back and hit my left cheek, about an inch under my eye. Suffice to say, I backed up a bit and switched to shooting a lighter, swinging steel target or paper.
No real damage done...the piece didn't even stick in my face, just bounced off.
