In the past I had a Winchester 94 rifle in 30 WCF, this thing was cool, it had a half round half octigon barrel, an ivory bead front site, with a tang peep sight, tiger striped stock, and nice patina, don't know what year it was made, also had a winchester 94 big bore in 375 win., and a Browning 71, in my stupidity I got rid of those guns, now I am wishing I had the 71 back, I do have a Browning 1886, don't know why I kept that one but I am glad I did, anyway just wondering if you had both, and had to choose which would you keep, the 1886, or the 71?
Thanks

The Model 71 as I prefer the 348 Winchester cartridge to the 45-70 and I prefer the pistol grip stock.

If the 1886 were chambered for the 50-100-450 there would be no doubt I would prefer the 1886 due to the cartridge.

Any rifle crank will appreciate the Model 71 or the Model 1886 more than the modern Model 94 with its cross bolt safety and rebounding hammer. However, in modern rifle the 356 Winchester is the same cartridge class as the 348 so the Modern Model 94 Big Bore is a good substitute without paying a “serious” collector premium.

I kick myself every time I think about that 71, it was a Browning, not an original, I had loads worked up for it that where hot, can't remember what they cronied at but, anyway I wish I had it back now, I don't even remember what I treded it for, I just remember that in hind sight it was a stupid move.
I have been looking for another one, but they seam to be hard to find, I did see an original for sale in this area for $1400, now if I just had the cash.
I have also been looking for a 94 big bore too.
I just picked up some of the Hornady leverevolution amo for the 45-70, it will be interesting to see how that shoots, now if we could just get some weather that would allow me to go shoot instead of moving snow!

Hands down, the 86. I have a Browning 86, and both a 375 and a 444 big bore. The 86 is far and away the favorite of the three. Leverevolution ammo? Overrated.
I have been looking for another 71, I did like the way it handled, and the weight, today I just happend to look at one of the Winchester 1886s with the half mag. it was sweet, how hard is it to do the conversion to get rid of the rebounding hammer, and the tang safty?

I know what you meant about the Leverevolution ammo, I think it has it's place in the 30-30, but the point of the 45-70 is large solid slugs!

Don't know about the rebounding hammer. My 86 is one of the first run made back in the 80's. It's not cursed with that feature.

Yes I know, my 1886 is a Browning which does not have the rebounding hammer, or tang safty either, I was just thinking of that light Winchester, it looks and handles like the 71, but I am sure it is not nearly as flat shooting as the 348, I just need something to shoot these two boxes of 348s that I have here so I guess I'll keep looking for that 71:D

I'll keep that in mind, if I can find a 71 that I can afford I know where I can get my hands on two boxes of factory ammo for it, not sayin where;) and not the commerative stuff, and for a good price, I will try and get those two boxes, if so I will have 80 rounds for reloading that means I just may be able to spare one round for your collection, if I can't find the 71...that I can afford then I will have 40 for you to choose from:)

I love both of my 71 Deluxes with the bolt peep....

BUT my 1886 Takedown in .33Win w/Lyman 21 sight is a reloader's dream now that you can get 200gr Flex Tip bullets to load....

The bonus with the .33 is that it seems you can pick one up for much less than what .348s are going for.... Just something to think about during your .348 search....

Do you mean the gun or the cartridge?
Thanks

Seems to me that 338 bullets will be much easier to find a bigger selection for. The 348 is pretty much an orphan.
I have been thinking about this for the last few days, and Browning 71 are pricy, so if I ever sell my Corvette I will buy one, but in the mean time, haveing to have a new gun:D I went down to the lower valley and picked me up a Rossi 92 stainless carbine in 44 Mag:), so if anyone wants a 1984 Corvette let me know, I'll even trade for a 71 and some cash!

Be sure to share pics with us when you get it. I love both and would not want to be forced to have to pick one or the other.

I have been on the lookout myself for an '86.

I will do that, I am going to try and send a copy of the FFL from my dealer and the money order tomorrow, so with any luck I should have it in two or three weeks, it is on the other side of the country:( Dang it has been so long since I had one I can't hardly wait to get my hands on it, it already has the Williams receiver sight on it and the dove tail plug so that is a plus, I figured that alone would be worth close to $100.00 when you figure shipping into the cost of the sight.
