Do I understand correctly that you can hunt Kangaroos in Australia? I know absolutely nothing about the hunting there.

What else is good to hunt there?

As a side note, what are the laws there concerning carrying a pocket knife and such? I'm on my way down under come December, and like carrying my Kershaw Leek. Is that possible?

Kangaroo's are not "hunted" as such. They can be "culled" on permit.

A landowner who has Kangaroo's in excess on their land can apply to the Dept of Environment for permission to cull. On conformation by a ranger, tags are issued.

If the number of Kangaroo's are large, most landowners would employ a professional shooter to harvest the 'roos for pet meat etc.
For smaller amounts a landowner can nominate a shooter to cull the 'roos for them.
They are not particularly smart animals - their IQ is said to be less than sheep!

Australia is a vast land and it depends where you hunt as to what is available.
Up in the Northern Territory game such as Water Buffalo, Scrub Bull cattle and feral pigs are the go.
Central desert country has feral camels and the wild dog - Dingo.
Most game consists of a number of deer species, feral pigs, goats, fox, hare and rabbits. Wallaby hunting is permitted in Tasmania.
Ducks and quail are common birds hunted in season.

Our country consists of 6 states and 2 territories. Each has it's own requirements for hunting permits.

The carrying of knives is discouraged by law in most states. However, if you keep out of nightclubs etc and carried the knife discreetly, you should have no problem.

yeah, bugger it, I can't translate a B&S for you yanks. If you have wild organized parties over there with a formal dress code for single men and women, where everybody drives a pickup, wears suits and gets drunk while chasing the opposite sex around, than that's what we mean. And that's why Australia's great.

B&S (Bachelor and Spinster Ball) Of cause you wouldn't go in a pickup you would take your ute, but that was part of the translation. Many people have had to buy their hired tux after the night.

I must add these are only held in the bush not in big cities and I never made it to one.

One of the lamentable P.C. laws we have in California bans the importation of kangaroo leather. If you want a nice light weight pair of kangaroo boots, you have to remember to get them while you're in another state. Ditto for elephant hide.

I'm sorry I've missed this post before. I've laughed so hard my side hurts!

I went to Darwin back in 1978 on an American warship and spent a day in the bush chasing and shooting things. My experience with the big Reds is a bit different than that described here. On the move, they can be as much challenge as I want. I found the pigs not much different than hunting them here and the buffs, well... easy. We were there in the dry season so where there was water, there was game.

I vividly recall being told during our port brief that we should not try to drink the locals under the table, because it couldn't be done. I found this not to be true, you CAN drink them under the table, litterally. However, after a short nap, they are back up and charging on while you are resembling the Leaning Tower of Pizza! Gallons of beer, buckets of Buggs and great company make for some wonderful memories.

Man I loved the Northern Territory, the land, the people... all of it. Sadly, I'm certain it is not the same.

I've heard that the .22 mag rimfire is the rd of choice for kangaroos, and that baseball bats are favored for killing rabbits, after lines of people run 1000's of them up into a fence corner?

Yeah down here in Australia, we don't really hunt Roos because their too easy to hunt. You will need tags to shoot them though. Other great things to hunt in Australia are goats, pigs, buffalo, foxes and rabbits
