I do believe that the age in every state is 21. The age restrictions for both long guns and handguns were set by the federal government. I'm not sure where or when the restriction for long guns was set but I found the handgun restriction.

[Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968

The Omnibus Crime Bill prohibited interstate trade in handguns, increased the minimum age to 21 for buying handguns, and established a national gun licensing system.[2] This legislation was soon followed by the Gun Control Act of 1968, which set forth additional gun control restrictions.]

I know this sounds screwy but you all know how screwy the government is. I was in a store back in the 1980's with a nighbor kid who was 18 at the time we were talking about various stuff with the sales guy. Ny niegbor kid could buy handgun ammo if he was buying it for a rifle but if it was for a handgun he had to be 21 to by it. Of course we all know that any 18 year old could lie and say he was getting it for a rifle. Now that is what the sales guy told me. How true it was at the time I don't know first hand. I do know that anything concerning handguns a person has to be 21.

I've been denied purchase of a couple packs of .22 CCI Maxi mags since I'm only 20 before even after telling them I needed it for a rifle. But I just went to the local Farm Fleet and bought the ammo there, they didn't ask at all. But You are supposed to be 21 to purchase hand gun ammo, I've heard the same thing as you on the question of if its for a rifle or hand gun. A freind of mine has a couple rifles that use hand gun ammo and has said that if its for a rifle they can't deny sale of it to you, I don't know how true that was, but he is the kinda guy that would grab it out of his truck walk in an show them that that is what he is buying it for, In a case of course.

Federal law only dicates purchasing from a FFL Dealer at the age of 21 for handguns and recievers. 18 from a FFL for longguns. However, each state has its own laws for individual transfers. Some states don't have an age limit for individual transfers or owning requirments. Alabama law probhits those under 18 from owning handguns (see link, pg 2)

So many opinions!

In MI-21 to buy handgun from FFL, 18 to buy from an individual.
Fde law says 21 to buy handgun ammo. Walmart gets castigated on the net regularly when the register quiries on ammo --'for rifle or handgun'? Most young dumplin cashiers have no idea why the question is asked. Sporting goods dept emp 'generally' know not to ask the sr citizens the question.

Your state may be different on the 18 yo from an individual. I thought that was also fed but??
