So.......how'd they shoot? I've never gotten what I call good accuracy out of any 300g bullet in any of my 45-70s, but I'm always open minded to someone else's results. IMR and Hodgdon 4198 are two of my favorite powders in this caliber, but I get best results from bullets weighing 400+ grains. The absolute best groups are with the Rem 405g JSP bullet. They shoot very, very good with a lot of different powders. Show some pics of the groups you got.

I didn't take any pictures of the target afterwards today however in my Marlin Guide Guns they shoot a 1.00" group at 100 yards if I do my part or in a bench rest...... They actually are one of the more accurate or repeatable rounds that I load - note with a scoop. When I get anal enough to measure every last grain they don't seem to be that much more repeatable so I stick to the powder dipper most of the time.

Thanks,

Ever try 325gr FTX? My 1895G sure likes them. The larger group was shot first and is 3/4". Too high, so I adjusted down an inch for group #2. I'll call that good.:D

Nice looking levergun my friend.... Yes I've shot and reloaded FTX rounds in both 444 and 45/70. I still have a few boxes of bullets left. They shot great in both rifles however too expensive to buy (loaded or just bullets for reloading) so I've moved on to other bullets/boolits.

1895, I am so proud of you doing the good work.
Obviously I am a big fan of the 45-70. My 1895gbl happily digests whatever combo I want to feed it.
Be it 400 grain Remington or 300 grain Hornady hp or the 405 grain Lee hollow base lead projectile it just wants to
please, like a young puppy. A very great cartridge.

Try 48 grains of H4198 behind the 300 grain hp, my GBL does a MOA . A nice mild load.
