I was getting dog food and walked past the sporting goods department at the local Wal-Mart and saw a pile of Winchester .22 ammo. It was the red bulk packs of "333" ammo for less than $10.00. I picked up as much as I could easily afford and left the store. It is hit or miss to find .22 ammo around here. All the best...

I did the very same thing a couple of days ago at Walmart. And everytime we go thru checkout they always ask if we are using the ammo in a pistol. Wonder of other Walmarts ask the same question.:)

Other Walmarts ask the same question. When they started doing it, I thought it was some new legal requirement, but no one else has ever asked. This means they are collecting the data for some other purpose. Who knows what that is, but if Michael Moore can pressure K-mart to stop selling handgun ammunition, it seems plausible that Walmart might have struck some kind of deal with him.

I.D. is required to purchase handgun ammunition if you're under 21 in increasingly many places. The evil empire may simply have a corporate policy to ask?

There's so much 22 ammo around here it's just like 'the old days,' except the prices have doubled. :(

They've been asking that question for close to twenty years around my area. I finally got curious once and asked what difference it made as it could be shot in either a rifle or handgun. If it was for a handgun I had to prove I was 21 years of age while for a rifle I could just pay for it. Thus I always answer its for a rifle. More complete assnine regulations that originate from does anyone really know where?

I have bought both the Remington and Winchester 22rl from Wall Mart. They never ask me anything but I guess if it has to do with age, it would not make any sense to ask me. They both shoot well for me. Neither works in my old 22 made in Austria; that one needs the slower 40 grain ammo.

they use to ask that here in Missouri but years ago (about 20 now) missouri passed a law that exempts rimfire ammo from that, however if you go to buy 357 mag ammo for your cowboy gun you better be 21. i am sure that walmart has a prompt that comes up and it is up to the stores to figure out if it applies to that store or not based on which state or even city it is in.

A little gray hair helps, huh?!?!? Last time a kid asked if I was over 18 (think I was buying an airsoft gun for my kid) it occurred to me I was 18 before he was even born.....

Here in NC they still ask that question at Walmart, and even with very little grey hair but visible they do ask me every time, one day I decided to say : yes It's for a handgun and they took my ID and put the number somewhere in the register, and when I asked the lady why do you do this? she replied: It's just for the record because it's for handgun...
After that day my answer is always "for rifle" and I just pay and go.
Go figure!!!....
