Nothing like yours but the first time I took my S & W 460 to the range I hit a 1 ft. sq. steel plate 5 out of 10 shots at a 140 yards. I have not been able to repeat that again first time lucky I guess. But it is always fun.

Well, I have a couple stories, but I'll refrain from telling on myself.

I was attending one of John Linebaughs seminars in Cody and witnessed a fellow from Alaska make the following shot.

The challenge was a deer sized steel cutout at 600 yard from a sitting position with a large caliber handgun, 4 rounds in thirty seconds.
This was to duplicate a shot by Elmer Keith.

This fellow was shooting an old 44 mag, I believe an old flattop. Well worn from years of carry. Numerous spotters were employed with (really good) spotting scopes to call the hits and dust plumes.

He sat down and proceeded to put all 4 rounds within a foot of that target, COLD. No practice. I can guarentee you I wouldn't want that gentleman shooting at me. It was quite apparent afterward that he and his firearm were constant companions.

5 gallon milk bucket on the 200 yard berm, about 217 yards from firing line. Takes awhile to figure out bullet drop with each gun and to find the aiming point but eventually I can hit that bucket with every hand gun I own except for 2. One is to inaccurate and the other is a 45 BP that I have never tried beyond 30 yards. 22 single six and S&W M41, 38 spcl and 357 mag in a Dan Wesson 357, 44 spcl and 44 mag out of a Ruger Super Blackhawk, 45 ACP out of 3 different 1911's, 41 Mag out of a S&W M48, and last but not least 9MM out of my brothers Browning but I don't know what model it is.

Nothing spectacular about it and I figure about a 60% hit rate with most guns, better with some than others and I can do it with either hand. In fact I do better with the left hand with the 22's. It's just 40 years of plinking and fooling around and some serious competition with serious folks.

I can teach anybody who wants to do the same in an afternoon. Easier from the bench obviously but off hand is more fun when you hear that clank and you know that you just sent a tiny chunk of lead out of a short piece of pipe at a ridiculous small target ant a ridiculous long range. It's good for the ego and makes you better looking. :D

My middle son took out a ground hog with my 30-30 Contender at 120 yards, Myself, I really don't care about impressing people unless they are good lookin ladies, but they generally out shoot me while we are together.

I have made some fantastic long range shots, but in all honesty I know there was a lot of luck involved. I saw Bob Munden shoot a decent 5 shot group with a 2" snubby 38 revolver at 110 yards. Unsupported. I don't think there was any luck involved either. That man is good.

I try to tell people that snubbies aren't inaccurate, wish I had seen that guy shoot 'cause he proved my point. Thanks for the info!

The best shot I've ever seen from a non professional was a on a running coyote with a .44 Mag from appx 200 yards. I've seen Bob Munden take a lot of long shots, including a balloon at 300 yards with a J Frame, and a playing card at the same distance with a 1911.

My best shot was a 3" diameter steel pole at approximately 125 yards with a .22 and a .45, offhand. Its not bragging though, because I've blundered many more shots.

Shot with the Sheriff of Iowa county Wisconsin once. He was testing me to see if I was good enough to teach his deputies. He shot his Colt Detective Special with 2" barrel he had carried as back up when he was a state trooper and I shot my 45. All of the deputies snickered when we started shooting, me because of my 45 and him because of his ancient old snub nose. When we laid the targets on the bench and walked away all the gigglers came to look and they all stopped laughing. Only difference between his target and mine were mine had bigger holes. For the next 2 1/2 years those boys were mine. I will admit to being impressed with his shooting.

It's a funny thing, but even with a 1.5" barrel, more often than not the bullet goes where the sights were lined up when the hammer fell.

Thanks for the stories guys. It's good to hear 'em.

I wish I still had my prime time eyesight and trigger control. Ah, the conceit of youth...

I would try to instill fundamentals to new shooters by shooting my issued M9 upside down and using my pinky finger on the trigger generally at 25m but sometimes at 100m. No matter how you hold the gun, stance, breathing, sight alignment and trigger squeeze matters.

A few memorable shots are; at 90 yards killed a goose with a 3 inch 45ACP, 140 yards killed a turkey with a 7-30 Waters Contender, repeatedly ringing a 12 inch circular gong at 200 yards with both 38 and 44 special (all off hand open sights).

ive got a taurus raging bull with a pair of quick remove, return to zero scopes, and a couple scopes that i swap back and forth... anyways, with a 4x scope, with some 297 and hornady xtp mags in the 300 gr flavor, it will put a cylinder full of 5 into 4" at the 200 yard marker.

not super fancy, but that ol 454 kills em dead pretty quick at those distances.
