Hi Guys,

I am a retired Federal Air Marshal and former Marine. To keep busy, Ive decided to create a newsletter with the intent of teaching people about shooting, mostly the basics, but some advanced stuff. I want to concentrate on home and self defense. the problem that I have is that I dont have a lot of contact with non-shooters. I am looking for suggestions as to what a non-shooter might want to learn.

I have the website up and ready LearnHowToShootGuns and I have enought basic material to get started (grip, stance, trigger controll, etc) but I need a lot more to sustain the vision that I have. I know there are a lot of nocie and wannabe shooters that would like a place to learn, and I am giving my content away for free, I just need suggestions for subjects. feel free to contribute if you have a subject that you like.

I appreciate any help that I can get

Great idea Howtoshoot. Where you planning on doing a section about managing recoil? For example how much difference there is between say a 32ACP and a 44 mags recoil. I have seen people on more then one occasion, that have had large bore hand guns get away from them or hurt themselves because they were not properly informed of how to handle the increased recoil from the larger cal handguns.

You have a genuinely great objective, good for you, but, about your statement...
"I am looking for suggestions as to what a non-shooter might want to learn."

Given the diversity of what non-shooters don't know about Firearms, and their individual interests and tastes, that may be a very difficult task to accomplish ! It may be easier to focus on the basics, and let them steak out a Forum, for any specifics.
This one comes to mind

Two of my "pet peeves" about an inexperienced Shooter are...
He doesn't know where to keep his Trigger Finger, when not aiming the gun, and
He doesn't understand how important it is, to keep his firearm pointed in the right direction.

I am starting a similar project at our local gun club. We are the largest gun club in Pennsylvania with over 5,000 members. I am on the Board of Directors and we are concerned that new members are being added every month and we have no idea if they have ever handled a firearm or attended a hunter safety course. Teach them " Start with a 22". If you don't believe this yourself, then I question vour qualifications. You might try to get to talk to womens groups. Try setting up a table at festivals, fairs etc

Doing what others have done is a good idea. Visit other websites to see what they did and do the same thing only better. Why invent the wheel once again? Also see what the shooting schools teach their students and do the same thing. Also survey the literature, books and magazines, and do the same thing. Now I don't mean copy word for word but the problems they tried to help their readers solve still exist and you need to cover the same problems.

Advertisers may pay you a few dollars for costs to help out. A link to their shooting school or magazine may be just what they need. I don't mean ads for home depot but related ads for high quality resources that you think would help. You might want to include them even if not paid.

There may be articles out there that you would like to show on your website and many magazines will let you provided you give them the reference and a link to their website.

The website/publication should look professional so people think a pro did it. There are a lot of these sorts of efforts out there and I believe they are called zines. If you publish on the web there are no costs except for the work you don't want to do yourself. Paper forms on the other hand are very expensive. Postage is an expensive thing and may cost more than the actual printing and paper.

Perhaps first start to publish twice a year and then more often as you get better at it.

It's almost like you are doing a "Shooting for Dummies" exercise. My suggestion is to help newbies understand the terminology used with firearms and put an emphasis on safety. How often do you see peoples eyes glaze over when they don't understand the terms being thrown at them. This is true of any subject, not just firearms. My youngest is going through 4-H firearms training (and doing quite well) and the youngsters all related better to the instructor when we took the time to explain all the terms and show illustrations where possible. I did several show-and-tell activities that help them understand and piqued their interst. Good luck with your objectives on this. It is certainly worthwhile and thank you for your service.

Hey Guys, thanks for your input. I havent been around a novice shooter on a range in years, at least not one that I could supervise one on one, It sounds like I need to make sure that they dont kill themselves or anyone else on the firing line before I try to teach them to defend themselves. Im starting with an email newsletter and some attached youtube videos. due to your comments, I started with a video on what gear to buy before you go to the range. Seems like some of the first steps would be...

A reasonable assessment as to why one wants a Firearm.
then,
Just what type/use is the intent (plinking to Cape Buffalo)

Then once those things are established, step to the "use".
