I just mounted a Williams FoolProof on my new 1886.  I also bought a Marbles #87 rear sight dovetail blank at the same time (from brownells), and drove out the factory rear site.  The blank is loose in the slot!  It bottoms going across on the taper with maybe 2/3 of the slot used up, rather then being even.

Has anyone else put a blank in their 1886 rifles, and if so, which one?

Tom: I put a blank in mine (make unknown) and no problem. You may ahve expanded the dovetail a bit if the original sight had any taper to the dovetail and you drove it the wrong way. There are a few  ways to tighten the dovetail (including a couple which you may not care to do):
1. Using a brass hammer carefully peen the edges of the dovetail down a bit to tighten the fit.
2. Using a center punch raise a dimple on the bottom flat of the dovetail on both sides of the barrel
3. get a bit of brass shim stock and fit it betewen the bottom of the blank and the barrel
4. epoxy it in place with epoxy glue or JB Weld
5. try another blank in the event the first one you got was a bit undersized.
