A few years back I got into Remington 700 BDL's and bought more calibers of that rifle than I care to admit, but one aspect of that gun I disliked was the feed. Straight down from the top, not a magazine feed and with cold fingers and since I load and unload my gun fairly often it turned into a pain. (I hunt whitetails in my 21 acres right from my house and when I come home I unload it: remove the bullet from the chamber)

Anyway, I am now open to guns other than a Remington 700 BDL AND I have decided I am going to get a 30-06. I have had everything from 300Win Mag down to a 223, but never the ole trusty 30-06 and I have 'set my sights' so to speak on getting one. I really like to be able to shoot from ONE gun 55 grainers(!) or more likely --- 110 grainers up to 220 grainers! I load now just not 30-06 yet.

It will be for target shooting and for coyotes, but mostly for deer. I will be hunting big whitetails in Upstate NY and deer in Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They can grow them pretty big in both places.

It will be a hunting gun and I want wood stock. So far, I like the Tikka's and the A bolts and the Weatherby's. although another Rem with detachable mag (DM) is in the running, too.

Most hunting shots will be 50 to 200 yards. I have a 50 yard range and a 125 yard range for my target shooting and playing/experimenting.

I want a lighter rifle with a really good recoil pad like a pachmayr. I hunt in very rough terrain and a heavy rifle is no fun.

I am receptive to buying used. I do not care about a couple of scratches. It is a hunting gun and I've got a few scars myself and I prefer to see these as "character marks".

I'd like to keep the price tag at $850 or under.

I also need a scope on this and I like Nikon glass for best value --- really brightens things up, although again I am open to something new. 9 to 12 power FIXED. Under $400 or under for the glass.

Also, I still have a nice Rem 700 BDL in 243 caliber but wondered if there was a way to convert that to a detachable magazine (DM) model at low cost. I know it can be converted but I thought I recall it being expensive and needed a gunsmith.

Anyway, going back to the thread----any one have good recommendations for a Detachable Magazine fed, good looking, light, 30-06 hunting rifle that will put them where I want them at Whitetails 50-200 yards at the price range listed above?

The M-700 is a magazine fed rifle, perhaps you want a "detachanle box Magazine"

I just saw in the Cabela's shooting magazine that they make a conversion kit for the Rem. 700BDL to a box magazine, you may look into it. My dad made the mistake of buying me a 700 ADL for my first rifle, all belly fed and extracted no floor plate. I vowed to never do that again.

Never had any issue with blind magazines.Just takes a little longer to unload I have blind mags, hinged floorplatesand detachable box mags and never left any behind because of the magazine.Do have to say that detachable mag is handy though.

Yes, handy and faster is the reason for wanting a clip (magazine) instead of loading from the top.

I mean here is the drill--I get home from work. I have about an hour before it is dark. I get dressed for hunting, walk out on the porch, chamber a round and head into the woods. About an hour later I am back. I need to get that bullet OUT of the chamber and NOT FEED any more in. It is so much easier to TAKE THE MAGAZINE OUT, work the bolt to EXTRACT the bullet in the chamber. Done. RATHER THAN, cradling the rifle, extracting the bullet from chamber and when closing the BOLT also compressing the bullets that are in the spring fed chamber so a new one does NOT feed. PITH.

Getting the round out of the chamber is easy just open the bolt.Unless you have reason to empty the magazine there is no real need to do that.Leave the bolt open and magazine full.It sounds as though you are leaving the magazine loaded anyway,Now if you are concerned about someone closing the bolt and loading the gun and something bad happening, by all means unload the magazine.Doesn't the BDL have a hinged floorplate?Open the floorplate and the rounds will fall out of the magazine.I'm pretty sure the detachable magazine conversion is a bolt on project. Now if you have ADL models then you have to remove the wood from the bottom of the magazine cut in the stock and inlet the bottom of the stock for the new floorplate metal. 264--with all due respect when you OPEN the bolt and eject the round in the chamber YOU must compress the BULLETS in the feed with your other HAND to keep another from feeding when you close the bolt again. If you just leave the BOLT OPEN, then that is another story.

Of course the ejected round needs to GO somewhere and that means top feeding THAT into the spring loaded "magazine". With cold hands that is just a pain.

So you will not load the extracted round back into the Detachable magazine?I have been shoooting for over 40 years and am very competant at loading and unloading firearms.Just was having a hard time understanding the NEED to close the bolt with magazine full.Last time I checked my detachable magazines they all worked off of spring pressure. With all due respect of course.Guess maybe you want a reason for a new rifle, thats cool. All the Rifle Models mention above are good choices. The KwikKlip conversion would be much more cost effective if you have the caliber you want already.I have an old 700 ADL 7 mag I plan to convert to a detachable mag. Maybe I'm spoiled by the great weather I have to endure where I live.I have hunted in cold weather and do know it makes some things tougher to manipulate. My appologies if I have offended you.

You don't have to fully chamber the round on a push feed gun.

Hold the gun vertical, and push the bolt forward till the round strips free of the magazine.

At that point, slowly withdraw the bolt. The round will be sitting on top of the bolt, and you can tip the rifle to one side and let that cartridge fall into your hand.

Repeat as necessary.

No need to apologize. sometimes it is hard to explain with typing on a forum what the issue is.... anyway I do NOT want to UNLOAD all the rounds from the magazine within the 700 BDL. I do however want to just remove the chambered round when I get home from hunting and put it BACK IN the magazine ---- a detachable magazine would just make it easier.

The bullet that I unchamber I would easily put back in the detachable magazine, and that is substantially easier than pushing it down from the top into a 700 BDL rifle with the magazine in the rifle... I have found this to be true especially with cold fingers cold mechanisms --- which in upstate NY is common during hunting season. ( i own some clips guns and they aer easy to feed while feeding down from the TOP into a RIFLE is not as easy.

The QuikClip aftermarket on Cabelas is NOT for a 243. So I guess I am SOOL..

Yup. so, I guess I just need a new rifle. Dam.

Rem700 nut--- Yeah, the 700 BDL is such a beautiful rifle, why don't they have a detachable magazine, aka a MAGAZINE that Can be removed, for ALL the popular calibers at least???

I mean 223, 243, 6mm, 308, 30-06, 300 Win Mag at the least would be nice!

They could do a 3-5 rounder (depending on caliber)

and a 7-12 rounder. (depending on caliber)
