was just thinking today that my .45-70 that i did custom work too which can hold 7+1 would make a good home defense gun with remington 405 or 300 grainers.. the recoil is not too bad and the lever action is fast. I have a red dot on there so it's pretty fast. and knowckown power is obvious

This will get you to thinking about over penetration with a 45/70: Do some research on Pancho Villa. He used to execute prisoners 7-8 at a time with a single bullet from a 45/70. They were lined up single file and shot with a single 45/70 round at point blank range. And that was with the current ammo of a 100 years ago. Would I choose my 45/70 in a HD situation ? Yes, if that was what was close to hand, with no other gun available. I've loaded tri ball loads in 45/70's ( 3 .457 RB's over 29 grains IMR4198) Don't recall how they'd feed thru a levergun though, haven't had a chance to test fire them in about 15 years. But they'd be awesome as a HD round.
