I found a Marlin 336 in .30-30 at a local shop and was wondering if someone knew anything about it. It has a straight grip and a short barrel that appears to be about 18" long. It's in pretty good shape and the asking price is $229.00 but I can probably get it for around $200.00.

It's a 336T, or Texan.  I just bought one made in 1980 (20 serial# prefix).  It is accurate.  Marlin also made one for K-mart with a Birch stock marked "TK".
$200.00 is a good price.  I paid more for mine as it was unfired in the box.  If you will drop by the Marlin website talk forums and check out the Collector's Corner, there are folks there who can tell you all you  want to know about this rifle and others.

The 18.5" 336T was first cataloged in 1980.  A gentleman on the Marlin Collector's board (actually two different gentlemen) have copies of the catalog.   The Blue Book of Gun Values lists it as 1983 only but this is incorrect.  I have a copy of the 1980 catalog on the way, will report.  Information you gave very interesting, thank you.
