i recall hearing that the barrel thread pitch and shank diameter are the same on the marlin xl/xs bolt action and the savage rifles. does anybody know this to be true? it would be a nice option to be able to choose from the wide variety of chamberings that are out there so easily...

Yes they are. The barrels, and nuts are both the same.
Your Savage nut wrench fits the Marlin nut quite nicely as well.

it would only make sense to use available components. i'm not positive but i think that e.r. shaw makes barrels for savage... they both went through a swirl of publicity for retooling at about the same time. although it was never actually stated that they work together e.r. shaw has their own rifle out which is entirely savage...
