I've been asked to get this out to fellow Michigan CPL'ers grassroots support needed ASAP for this legislation. Contact your state legislators in the House and Senate telling them you support this legislation.
Media already on top of Pistol Zones Proposal

Can you get this out to all the gun groups/forums/etc that you participate in? The bills weren’t even numbered and are hitting the news…

We need to mobilize the grassroots sooner than expected.

Free press has added a poll to the article. http://www.freep.com/article/20110125/NEWS06/110125034/Michigan-lawmaker-would-allow-guns-in-more-places

The bills don’t have numbers yet but the media is already on top of it. This is a poorly-written story; they also asked him about his bill to move the CPL process to the Secretary of State but didn’t indicate that very well in the story. We’ll be putting out a press release and get you more info.

GREEN TO PROPOSE REPEAL OF GUN-FREE ZONES FOR C.C.W.

Prohibitions on those with permits to carry a concealed weapon on bringing their guns into certain major public venues like schools, sports stadiums and places of worship would be lifted under legislation to be introduced Wednesday in the Senate.

Sen. Mike Green is pursuing new legislation on guns.

The bills, sponsored by Sen. Mike Green (R-Mayville), also would eliminate local gun licensing boards and instead transfer all authority over permitting to the Department of State.

Mr. Green, as a House member, was the lead legislator on the effort in the 1999-2000 term to give applicants for a permit an automatic right to that permit unless they had certain criminal convictions or a history of mental illness. Previously, it was up to local gun boards who could get a permit.

"There's been a lot of proof that what we did was right," Mr. Green said. "I think most of the fear is gone as far as people illegally using the guns or people wanting a CCW other than to protect themselves."

Mr. Green said local gun boards should be eliminated because some continue to take too long to process permits, sometimes as much as six months.

"They drag their feet, drag their feet," he said. "We could rid of a whole bunch of junk we have to deal with by moving this to the secretary of state."

Mr. Green said he did not know for certain what committee would get the bills, but his understanding is that it would go to the Judiciary Committee. He said he did not anticipate the legislation would come up soon with all officials focused on economic legislation, but has asked Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville (R-Monroe) and Sen. Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge), the Judiciary chair, for at least a fair hearing.

They now have numbers. Gun owners for some dumb reason dont mind jumping thru many, many, many hoops. A truely dumb lot we are.
No disrespect, but speak for yourself when making comments like that. ;)

Gun owners, and legislators, have REMOVED many, many, many hoops, in recent years. The only place left in this country where you cannot get a carry permit is the nazi state of Illinois. That is a direct result of the hard work done by SMART gun owners and the politicians they elected.

FWIW -- All I had to do to get my lifetime LTC (license to carry) in Indiana was go to the county sheriff's office, fill out a single form and pay the ~$100 fee. I don't agree with taxing the 2nd amendment, but hey...the process was simple and the cost well worth it.

Is it that much harder to get a permit to carry in Michigan? I ask in all sincerity because I own land there and will live there when I retire. According to the NRA's "recmap" Michigan has a reciprocal agreement in place with Indiana, so I can legally carry there. When I become a resident of Michigan, I will "jump through hoops" to get a carry permit for that state. I doubt it will be much more difficult or expensive than it was in Indiana. ;)

Sounds like it's a little harder. You have to take about an 8 hour class by an NRA instructor, shoot you pistol a few times and listen to a lawyer (that's druelling over possible new clients) for about 2 hours telling you about your responsibility.Mostly bad things that can happen if you carry.Shoot somebody and you may not go to jail(lawyer still makes money) but the civil suits that follow may bankrupt you(lawyer still makes money).Have two drunk drivings and get pulled over again while carrying, automatic felony firearms (lawyer makes much money).Class is about 100 dollars, permit is another 115 dollars and has to be renewed every 4 years for the same money.

That's not a "little harder"...that borders on the ridiculous! Does all of the classroom stuff happen in one day, and do you have to sit through the class again, every four years? As far as the various liability stuff goes, that is just a sad reality of the legal system in our country today, where the victim is just as likely to be in court as the criminal.

One day class that are put on every so often by the local gun clubs and some sporting goods stores if they have a shooting range. The NRA certificate is good for life but the county clerk will tell you to take a refresher course upon renewal but don't ask for any verification.Don't know anybody that has taken a refresher.Just tell them you went back over the material and that has been fine.
Made the mistake of taking my S&W 41 mag 8 3/8 barrel to shoot at the class, wow was that gun frowned upon, told them the only reason I wanted a CPL was to carry back packing in wolf and bear country not downtown Detroit. But that didn't matter, that's not what the class was about.

In MI after jumping thru all the infringements, paying the fees you will not be able to carry many places (CEZ)s.

AND when you get here you will be able (required to) register all your handguns with the State Police..

Many gun guys like yourself, who think the system in IN, "....isnt to bad..." like the gun registration cause couple years ago the legislature 'streamlined' it so you dont need to take the guns to the cop shop-just some paperwork.

Unless you have a license (CPL=Concealled Pistol License) you can NOT use someone elses handgun, just those registered to you.

Therre dont seem to be any agreement to get rid of the CEZs or the registration. I say either those or the legislators.
