I am a shotgunner that happened to trade for rifle that i know nothing about. I searched all the posts on here and couldn't find the information I need si I am hoping someone here can help.
I was told it is a Winchester Model 70 Custom shop by the guy I got it from. The left side of the receiver says "Winchester Registered Trademark". The right side has the number 1725 on it. The only Marks on the barrel are 9.3X64 stamped in the left side near the receiver.
It has a beautiful walnut stock with lots of figured grain. The barrel and receiver are a polished but satin blackish finish. It has a red rubber butt plate that reads Winchester on it.
The gun looks to have been fired very little if at all with the only wear being where you can see the bolt has been operated.
I gave him $1500 for it and I am not sure if I stole it or got screwed. It is obiviously a high quality item by the materials and workmanship. My understanding is that this caliber is used for big game and was/is popular in Africa.
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

For a custom shop gun in an odd caliber, you are in the right ballpark price-wise.
The caliber is one that I would love to play with but guns and ammo for that caliber are a bit expensive. Looking at the loading manuals, it appears to easily have enough oomph for anything in North America - delivers as much or more energy as the .338 mag.

custom shop gun i would say good buy/trade. try to contact Winchester with serial # for the details.
pre 64 type action or 'push feed'
9.3X 64 Brenneke. probably one of the best cartridges ever devised in terms of efficiency. 375 H&H performance from an '06 length action using 25% less propellant.
brass is a bit hard to find at times and less bullet selection than .375 but its not a big deal. you have to reload for this cartridge. data is readily avail. from several different sources. i think you'll be quite happy with it.

I have had some interest in this cartridge. Tikka and CZ show they manufacture it, but the tikka is difficult to get in this cartridge. Tikka 1:14 twist, CZ 1:10. Sweeds like this cartridge for Moose(Elk), great stopping power and little meat damage, so they say. Now I need some justification to buy it.

Fantastic cartridge, but the 338 win mag would be a better choice. All things concidered of course.
